Today's Irish News carries a story on convicted sex offender and leading Loyalist Mark Harbinson, who was jailed for three and a half years for sexual activity with a 13-year old girl. Harbinson insists he was 'set-up' and has threatened to blow the gaffe on his erstwhile comrades and, more ominously (for him), the real political movers and shakers behind the shadowy Orange Volunteers.

He says he has written a book about his experiences.

"I used to sit with the great and good and I know how dirty this is. I have kept their sectets but not for much longer because I think the truth needs to come out."

Given the poor survival rate for Loyalists threatening their political masters, I suspect Mr Harbinson's terminal demise will be forthcoming shortly.

A road traffic 'accident' or 'accidental' drugs overdose would be the odds-on favourites at this early stage.

Harbinson's main beef appears to be that the fella arrested with him was not subjected to the same scrutiny as him - ie his mobile phone was not 'interrogated.

Cops found 1700 texts between Harbinson and the wee girl as well as the topless photos of her which guaranteed his conviction on his phone. To the best of my knowledge his fellow-arrestee has not been named publicly.

I doubt Harbinson will survive long enough for it all to unravel. Billy Wright and RJ Kerr certainly didn't.

Lovely chap that Harbinson . Turned Stoneyford orange hall into his base of operations . When he began to run foul of the authorities they finally raided it , and turned up a large list of peoples addresses and details . A lot of it from police files . My dads name and address was on their list . Coppers turned up here to let him know there was a loyalist threat to him. Still have the docket knocking about somewhere .

Without wishing to sound like the Zelig of urban 75 I actually met him once . My first night in Middlesbrough , completely lost as I was wandering about the streets on my own looking for an address . He came out of the bushes at the college and walked behind me for a bit. Then he went into a phonebox and lurked . Big bastard he was . When I found the people I was looking for, told them about it and described the guy they nearly shit . College and a few pubs had posters up about him warning people to steer clear . Was definitely him .

He was a fanatical loyalist , even attacked people..Catholics..during classes . Complete nut job and extremely dangerous . Cousin of mine knew him . And was mates with a guy who shared a house with him. More than once the guy woke after a heavy nights drinking to find cutson his legs...no idea how they'd got there . Twigged after beggsy was arrested he must have been coming not his room at night with a blade and giving him a little slice .

This meant reclassification to a "normal prisoner" status and he didn't have continue with any compulsory sex offender treatment/rehabilitation - it also enabled him to transfer out of Peterhead (then the specialist sex offenders prison for Scotland, till its recent closure) and back into the general prison population. Also, if he is ever released, he won't be subject to the travel restrictions and extra, lifelong scrutiny that serious sex offenders are now placed under.

There were quite a few tales about him circulating in the area a while back - of all the prisoners there, he seemed one of the most hated.

Scottish law can be odd . For example when a group of men gang raped a woman and slashed her all over with razors Nicholas Fairburn just let them walk free . Beggs would only be rearrested if somebody directed the cops to do so . We don't know for sure that would have happened .
