Daine Abbot supports John McDonell's nomination for leader

Diane Abbott has now put her name to JM's leadership bid as indeed have many others, inclusing the influential Mirror writer:Kevin Maguire. Looking at all the endorsements it is now clear that a new grassroots left is emerging. Though i am usually suspicious of leaders and of course, the modern LP, having worked with JM on welfare reform issues I think he does have very special qualities: integrity, compassion, a willingness to learn from others, rare in todays politicians.

Read what one endorser says

"Without any reservations, I proudly endorse the candidature of John McDonnell for the labour party leadership. John is a rare political icon whose unshakable believe in equity and justice, passion in defending workers' rights and unflinching support for trade unionism and his resilience in fighting against the erosion of civil liberties and in defence of the most vulnerable in the society is unassuming. These have unequivocally made him 'a man of the people'. And why not.... his belief in the advancement and achievement of greater global industrial harmony, mutual economic engagements and opposition to domination and recolonisation have position him as better political player in dealing with international political economy especially with the developing countries. He is simply a beacon of hope for all."

They are not even nominating yet, so people can say what they like. :)

How many nominations he gets in reality will depend on who else is standing.

Firstly, you need to wait until they open nominations :)

John McD doesn't seem to have realised this bit. He has been running his campaign for over a year, bless him.

Secondly, you need to be a member of the Labour party. So that rules me out, then :)

Thirdly, you need nominations from at least 44 Labour MPs.

An MP who sends her kids to private school treelover...

unfortunately, the most leftwing, egalitarian MPs will think of nothing to advance their kids education. I can't remember his name, but he was MP for Brent somewhere, he regretted having sent his kids to the local comprehensive (I remember now, Bernie Grant), he would have had the means to send them to private school, as an MP.

diane abbot sending her son to private scholl is a disgrace maybe she should spend more time fighting for a decent education for all and less with those scumbags portillo and neill (is she still doing that awful show btw)

its too late for the LP ramsey mcdonnell cant do anything to save it

I wonder why Diane Abbot is 'burning her boats' like this. Her statement now means that she will not be able to expect any patronage from Brown when he inevitably wins the unannounced election, and so she will remain a back-bencher when she might have got her career re-launched by doing some fawning.

Is it that she expects to lose at the next General Election? Or is her only chance of being re-elected and so keep her current income, to position herself as a lefty? I remember when she seemed to be really a lefty but she has strayed far from that path over the years.

I think it's the latter. She wants to be seen as a lefty, because that her best chance of survival. By now, she has probably realised that she will never be in the cabinet, since this would require even more of a sell out than she has done so far, but she probably wants to stay as an MP.

No-one with any intelligence or political wit can really expect McDonnell to win, but I can see why people who wish to be seen as left wing might put their names behind him, since they would not be able to support any other candidate anyway...

There would have been a significant backlash in the left of the Hackney North party if she had not done so. Which might have been dangerous around the time of the trigger ballot for reselection, given that the right of the party in Hackney N always vote against her already...

I've been wondering the same, I think - like others - it's probably more a calculation of keeping her seat than anything else...

I’m sure she (DA) probably hasn’t too long left before qualifying for a comfortable pension and a seat in the Lords. What a complete and utter disappointment she’s been. However, the only good thing I’ve ever heard about her, is that she seems to be an attentive constituency mp following up disputes/complaints and such.

I don’t think it’s acceptable to refer to her as a ‘coconut’.
