Custom number plates

JWH reads Fast Car
*snigger*

I think they're deeply naff, but I've always thought this was me being a typical middle class snob since I associate them with the nouveau riche and a crass aspirationalism

Accordingly I'm somewhat amazed at how universal the opprobrium for them is on class conscious u75 ;)

I can't see the problem at all. If someone wants a personalised plate that's fine by me.

Quite fancy one myself actually, but I'd have to learn to drive first.

I'd have something like-

7WAT

or Y4 7WAT

I once saw a TVR with 7VR as the number plate & it looked pretty good to be fair.

Its like the viz top tips that went something like this ........

"Why buy an expensive personalised number plate when you can chnage your name by deed poll

sent in by JRL 6TY"

A few of them have made me smile (A3 RAT or, just last week, 33 BRA [driven by a young blonde]) but the majority come across as wanky to be honest.

And incredibly some of them are sold for up to 100k.

As far as I'm concerned anyone who spends 60 grand on a fucking number plate deserves to have their car burnt to a crisp.

G8 SUX is only a few hundred quid... ;)

My parents have one. My grandad got it on a car bought from a scrapheap before the war. The car was scrapped later but he kept the documents, and just before they brought in the rule that you have to have the actual car, he swapped it onto his new car. It's been going down through cars ever since, it's currently on an old Vauxhall Astra, which is worth a lot less than the plate.

I once got stuck behind somebody for 20 mins in the DVLA office whilst he sorted out a personalised plate for his son's 18th birthday.

Tosser!

I only wanted to pick up a form.

You can buy a PEN15 for £27,500.

I thought PEN 15 and PEN 1 S were never issued. Shame really, as PEN1S would be very apt on some city tosser's Porsche.

A lady who lived down the road from my grandmother had '2 HOT.' I can't imagine how much that must have been worth, but it was tacked onto a tatty old Volvo 340!

The really really expensive ones

ABC 123
1 ABC
etc

are owned by Leicester City Council and are paraded around on council vehicles because BC was the local designation for Leicester when number plates were first issued. At least that was the case when I had nothing better to wonder about when I went to Uni there..

I think car related ones are ok A1 TVR, L8TUS, SK0 DA etc.

All others are pure toss.

The only one I ever fancied was AND 505Y, cos my name is Andy and my first car had 505 in the VRN.

That was £800 when I saw it, but obviously I'm not stupid so I didn't buy it.

There was a Cardiff plate a few years ago that got sold for loads, OBO 110X :D

Once saw a beautiful E-Type Jag in Bond Street with plate CLA55.

Used to see a lovely TVR Cerbera with the plate RAP1D, I don't care what a waste of money it was but it looked . Shame the fella changed it for a Ferrari 456 which just didn't look quite so good, saw his bird (I assume) bang the front coming over a speed hump, his face was a picture.

I think K1NGS was the most expensive ever and went for something like a quarter of a million pounds!

I do think that a clever one or one that really works perfect (like the ones above) can look good. Some cars are a work of art, I honestly find that a 'neat' plate on it rather then some random characters can top an almost perfect car off.

I wonder what the person with H1PPY is like?

Can't remember the name of the couple, the Duke and Duchess of somewhere, but they both had matching black Bentley's, his reg was
'M1 Lord' and her's was 'M1 Lady', me lord and me lady. I did think that was pretty cool, although on they whole, they are a bit crap :p

Also doesn't Jimmy Tarbuck have C0M1C, or summit like that.
