Colonel H - shot in the back by his own troops?

Mmmm, they have quite a lot to do with it, actually. They'd show directionality, at least.

Nobody disputes directionality. He was shot in the back (the cause of the myth) charging one position and ignoring another despite being warned about it. He was a twat.

Apart from anything else, there was no need for his own men to kill him.

You say that, but i'd beg to differ. Leading your men into certain death would be enough reason to bump him off. I may have even done it myself. A CO during a tour of NI was pinned up against a wall & throttled for making some strange decisions we didn't agree with.

Army grapevine was saying that it wasn't the first time he'd made some very strange decisions. His mental health was obviously frayed to say the least.

Oh there's no doubt that it was a shit call.

He's been credited with breaking the deadlock at GG (hence the VC) and a lot of stuff about it being the first land battle of the war, if we'd have failed there we'd have lost the war .... blah blah, but apparently there was air support available to him anyway. So some say he was a glory seeking fuckwit others disagree. "The Life And Death Of An Unusual Hero" is a good read, but it was written by a mate of his!

What I heard is that he was a bit gung-ho and ignored what they were meant to be doing and basically put himself and his men in unnecessary danger.
I worked for a while with an ex Para who was with him before he was killed, he had nothing but contempt for Jones and said that all he wanted to do was get himself a medal, the Para told me that they were attacking or were pinned down by an Argentine machine gunner when Jones decided that they were going to charge the machine gun, the other Para's told him to go and fuck himself they were not moving, I think he said that a sergeant and possibly one other went charging up the hill with Jones while the rest of them stayed put.

I remember being on exercise with Royal Anglians when I was in the CCF at school being told by a squaddie about H getting shot by his own men. This was in 1985 iirc.

H was a right cunt, allegedly...

That tallies with the stories I was told.

What happened next? Did he say?
On that fateful night H Jones had led his men around the shoreline of a small bay by darwin, silhouetted by a lovely moon of course the argies had a turkey shoot heading there way, upon there arrival they were abushed big style.
H Jones and his men were pinned down at the bottom of a re- enterant for over a number of hours being unable to find a way out (as for his troops telling him to foxtrot oscar, I have never read or heard of that before) at this point H Jones had to rally his men so H Jones and his seargent ran up the re-enterant to charge the machine gun post on the right hand side, H Jones and his seargent were charging up the left about half way up seargent Blackburn (I think that was his name) informed H Jones that rounds were tracking in the back of him seconds later H Jones fell to a wound.
His men, after hearing the message Sunrays down attacked the hill with such ferrocity they had done it within an hour.
This is how I learnt it:-
As a young corporal I was dicked As CO's bodyguard/ driver in the Falklands upon the hand over/ take over of my required kit and paper work was a bunch of maps and hand scribbled notes along with printed media on them, "oh and you'll need to know that lot by a week Sunday" I asked him why what was it, he told me that for the next 6 months every other Sunday you have got to do a battlefield tour for the public and anyone else who wanted to see them.
A memorial is placed by all of the battle sites and somewhere close by will be a tin of brasso and a rag to polish it, it's at the back on H Jones's.

It's an army urban myth like the bus load of nurses, the stalwart crossing the channel,IRA gunmen buried secretly, McDonald's giving money to the IRA  etc etc etc.
