Colonel H - shot in the back by his own troops?

Could be nonsense or rumours from the time but seems strange there are other sources too by look of it?
I had no reason why not to believe him. I didn’t probe too hard to be fair.

To be clear I wasn’t in the military at all. Worked with him after he had left the Army.
Just had a life long interest in the Falklands campaign and knew he was there.

How on earth did you end up here and then as your first post decide to bump a 5 year old thread speculating on this?

I was looking at my FNs across from my desk and It bought up the old memory of that conversation circa 1998 so thought I would google if anyone else had heard the same info.
I found this old thread so as mine was an independent source I commented as it adds weight perhaps?

There's an old saying about this. "The plural of anecdote is not data".

When I worked with a number of ex-forces types, there was a bit of a running ironic joke about how much better everything would be if it was all done on the basis of what some bloke in the pub thought. There's a long tradition of that kind of thing, and 99% of it is bullshit.

He was absolutely there. Of that I have no doubt.
Just out of interest, how is it that you have no doubt? There's a long tradition of Walt types claiming to be in the midst of the action, or whatever, such that if all their claims were true, half of Herefordshire would be a special forces base, Pen Y Fan would be worn down to a nub, and they wouldn't have been able to squeeze everyone in to the Falklands who claimed to be there.

I know he was there because he had photographs taken of himself there. Long before photoshop too.
Plus I did discuss various other things about the conflict and let’s be honest you know when you are talking to a genuine veteran.
I have also seen banter with his fellow paras on Facebook (I am still in contact via FB) so if it’s not true that he was there it’s one very complex effort to pull wool over my eyes that’s lasted for more than 20 years.

these would be people from the same regiment who have proved so forthcoming and honest about their brave actions in ballymurphy and derry

:)

The Falklands tally is only exceeded by the embassy balcony tally.

Apparently, it also worked the other way. I remember hearing a story, from a moderately unimpeachable source, that one of the people who was there was in cover under a bus, but when he came to emerge, his webbing straps got stuck on something, and he ended up missing all the fun. I think it's probably true - if it isn't, it's because the bastard who told me was winding me up, which isn't beyond the realms of possibility :D. Although it's a weird windup story...

Especially if some rotten cunt has screwed in the gas regulator. :D
Standard on the ranges. Shut it, and hope the guy who was next didn't notice. Of course we poor medics had the SMG as our personal weapon, more effective for beating the enemy over the head with than shooting him. :)
