What goes on first?

We have recently taken to buying something called a scallop from my local chippy to eat on the side- it's a large slice of potato, battered and deep fried - are these just a lancashire thing or more widespread cause I am telling you they are lush AF

Midlands thing. I love a scallop.

Science fail :facepalm::mad:

Put my order in then got banished to a socially distanced waiting area in what would be the eat-in restaurant in non-covid times. Couldn't see the counter from there so not sure if salt or vinegar went on first, and the woman serving was already regaling the fryer man with weird shit customers had said earlier in the day so didn't really want to add myself to the list by asking. Had to add my own vinegar when I got home anyway.

I have never specified the order when ordering (probably sounds absurd but I’ve never thought you could, even though I have ordered just salt etc for others) but I find they never put enough of either on and I need to add more.

You misunderstood me. I wasn't claiming any Northerness, God forbid. I was saying I lived in close proximity to many Northerners for a few years and they all said 'egg n chips' and never the reverse.

Hence, my 'how Northern' query, as I wondered if it was from further up the country
P'raps it's just scousers then.

Trying to remember what my local chippie does.

I usually have salt and vinegar and my bet is they put the vinegar on first.

Anyhow trying to cut down on salt atm.

Has anyone ever had a Wigan chippy? I know they're meant to be the stuff of legend, with their smack barms and so on.

although i did some security work on a building site at galton village in smethwick and bought a bag of chips that was inedible. i threw them out for the foxes but even they gave them a wide berth.

Been going years, them. Round here anyway. Soggy nonsense in the middle, mostly. Sounds like you've got lucky.
