Should I ask for a refund or is this offer sufficient?

I need if not the name of the place, more clues as to its identity as, after all the fuss, I want to try it. It won't be this weekend as I have a booking already. 👍 I am sure it will be a good pizza if not one of the best in the UK.

there is a pizza on the menu with maple syrup.

Just had a consultation with Mlle Fire about this.

She’s worked in catering/hospitality for 30+ years and whilst things do/have happened it is vanishingly rare and usually only happened to very rude people. A long time ago. General consensus is that the industry is a lot more regulated and grown up now.

Or she is…

But I also just learnt that customers being arseholes in cocktail bars do get extra angostura bitters which gives you the shits. :D

So yeah. Send stuff back. Be polite and all will be fine.

Yeah, that “vanishingly rare” thing…

A good mate of mine is a chef and from stories I’ve heard, perhaps the term “unevenly distributed” is a better term for the risk / frequency.

With the further caveat that price range is the opposite of a safeguard. In a high end establishment the rank and file of the staff may have higher degrees of resentment for the clientele.

Tbf - this is all second hand, but some of the stories involved some deeply felt vengeance in the telling. Especially the one with the ex of the chef who had brought her new boyfriend to the place.

I also have some “low tier food processing operative job” stories for anyone here who never wants to eat again.

So.
I went to a high end pizza place a week ago and the pizza was extremely rubbish. I ate most of one slice, hoping the next bite would be the portal to enjoyment, realised it wasn’t getting any better and decided to quit. I told the wait staff I wasn’t enjoying it and wouldn’t be eating any more, and asked for the bill. I was willing to pay for drinks and service, and I expected some kind of discount for the pizza.

I was charged full price. I queried this and was told there was no discount, I had to pay full price. The waitresses were both quite young and seemed unclear about how to handle my complaint, they didn’t even ask me what was wrong with the pizza. I asked if it was house policy to charge full price, they didn’t know. I asked if I might be able to talk to the manager but there was no manager on duty. So I paid and left.

If this had been a high street joint I would have taken it on the chin but this was a £17 pizza in a place that claims to be a cut above the rest. All the blurb on their website is about how fantastic is, how much care is taken about the origin of their ingredients, how much pride they take in their food etc.

I wrote to the company and explained everything and asked what their policy was. After almost a week of no response I finally got an email yesterday offering me two free pizzas for me and a guest at the same restaurant.

It irks me a bit that I’ve not been offered a refund, and I’m expected to go back to the same restaurant in order to get any mind of recompense.

Should I just accept the offer?
Would you ask for a refund? Is it worth the effort?
Am I being a Karen/Darren?
You've been given a rare and inestimable gift, something to give your secret worst enemy. I don't know why you want a refund instead of giving someone you don't like a shit evening
