I tend to like mine unadulterated however I sometimes put mayo on the bread/toast before the cheese. Also adding an egg on top makes it food of the dieties!

It's not diet food as far as I can see. ;)

In Amsterdam I had uitsmijter every day, and twice on my last day. It's like Ultimate Cheesy Egg and Ham on Toast*, and that.

*sometimes bread, tbf.

Croque Madam?

I am not sure I have ever had it for breakfast but would not think it odd.
Maybe more brunch on a weekend waking up with a hang over?

There are many variations on cheese on toast. I once lived in a house which lived off it - what you got depended on who was making it:

- strawberry jam under the cheese
- mint jelly under the cheese
- jalopenos under the cheese
- mayo on the bread, slices of red pepper under the cheese, splash of soy sauce when it's done

It's definitely both (and any other meal you care to name).

House mate made some lovely stuff the other day.
Crusty bread with off the bone ham, gruyere and then on top a fried egg with peas cooked in to the white of the egg!
Home made chutney (thanks B).
Twas totally amazing!

Oh, this was dinner by the way.

Given that breakfast can be anything from yoghurt to kedgeree, taking in kippers, toast and jam, cereals, eggs in various forms, fried bacon, sausages, black pudding, bread, croissants, cold meat, cheese, yesterday's cold pizza from the back of the sofa or nothing but the taste of toothpaste; then cheese on toast is fair game.

If you like fried bread, try the healthy and tasty alternative version 'Fried Bread Hocuseye'. It is made with wholemeal bread fried in virgin olive oil. It is sufficient on its own without other fried food. When this turns up in your favourite Michelin star restaurant, remember where you heard of it first.

Breakfast, snack, lunch, dinner, tea, supper, nightcap - any and all!

always knew you are a wise lady!

Aye.

Question is - sauce or no?

A little Tabasco sauce makes it a snack, without this it can be breakfast.

marmite is acceptable with cheese on toast at all times of day, as it a little bit of lee and perrins. ketchup on the side for dipping is only acceptable for brunch or snack, mayo is just wrong at any time of day.
