Cheese and onion roll

Like they did in pubs some time ago (and still do in a few)

As per this bbc article, not the subpar pastry wrapped variant.

I made some today, took them with me when I went to rugby. A bit like the ones in this picture in the bbc story

Bread roll, huge thick chunk of extra mature cheddar, huge thick slice of onion, from the middle of the onion. Nothing else.

Wrapped in foil as was going in a coat pocket, a bit sturdier. Cling film would be better for the full pukka pub experience. Wrapping helps to compress the ingredients. All important for when you take that first bite…

… Flavour explosion. So nice.

Going to take some more with me next time

I find these sorts of rolls are best when they've been taken out for the day on a picnic but not eaten. They've been carried around in a backpack and have been sat or leant on so they're quite warm.
Mine had been in a coat pocket for a few hours before eating

I had it with a few pints of Brixton beer whilst standing on the terraces so it felt apt given the pub associations

I love a cheese and onion roll but that up there is not ok.

Ideally I’d like a crusty roll or baguette.
Butter obviously.
The cheese has to be grated.
The onion should be more finely cut and preferably red onion.
Yes, I'd definitely want butter.

I was totally with you until the red onion bit.

Best ever Cheese & Onion rolls I had were from the Cardiff market, the little place in the corner with the black and white floor tiles up the walls.

I feel like what you describe, while certainly a cheese and onion roll, is not so much a pub snack and more the sort of thing I would buy in a small bakers or village shop given the extra preparation time involved.

However, I definitely see it being sold wrapped in clingfilm so no quibbling!

If the cheese is grated you lose half of it out the sides of the roll. You have to glue it all in place with mayonnaise and then you've basically got a cheese-flavoured mayonnaise roll, like the shite you get from the supermarkets.

Nah, you can squidge the cheese into the roll without extra liquid. Butter is fine.

I don’t like mayo in sandwiches and never buy a packaged sandwich. Freshly made to order only.

As per this bbc article, BRISTOL

Goodness gracious!!!

That reminds me of when I was at Uni in Newcastle upon Tyne and took a train to get back home to Leicester at the end of term.

Due to my incomparable incompetence I ended up in Bristol.

Realising I:
a. was on the wrong fucking train
b. had about ten minutes to catch a train going back the other way and
c. was really very hungry (I'd been on various trains for about 12 hours by then)

I left (running!) the station and found a pub. If I was really bloody quick about it I could maybe buy something to eat.

They had those cheese and onion things and I had just enough cash to buy one!!!

However, coming from Leicester, I asked for a cheese and onion cob because that is of course what they're called. But not, I quickly learned, in Bristol.

The chap behind the bar had absolutely no idea what the hell I was talking about as I ever more frantically asked for ACHEESEANDONIONCOB!!!!

Eventually he realised WTF I was ranting about (much pointing at the delicious cob and pointing at my mouth whilst I turned purple) and I caught my train with scant seconds in hand.

Happy days....
