Britain - A Christian Nation?

He's sort of right we are sort of christian in a quiet c of e way probably less aggresive than french secular behavior but hardly full on america god and guns.

‘Most people in Britain do not have Christian beliefs, do not attend any sort of church, and do not describe themselves as Christians when asked if they have a religion and if so what it is. Reliable studies like the British Social Attitudes Survey show over 60% of people in Britain never attend a religious service, 57% say they are not Christian. Other polls and surveys show over 60% don’t share core Christian beliefs like the divinity and resurrection of Jesus.

Some people are culturally christian - most of them are atheists. Not, i would think, the characteristics of a christian nation proper.

Britain was a pagan country once, before the christians showed up to teach us the virtues of throwing rocks at schoolkids for believing in the wrong kind of Jesus. And to think the pagans were supposed to be the barbarians.

Most religious people are just religious because they want an excuse to look down on others, and this includes those in this country who claim to be pagans according to pre-christian traditions. They know nothing about pre-christian traditions they just want to patronise people and act all smug.

I've also noticed a worrying tendency for these quote unquote pagans to associate themselves with fascist politics. I guess they're both based on an entirely fictional idea of 'native' British culture. Just like with christians who ignore the whole forgiveness and decency thing, there seem to be plenty of pagans who preach love for all living things but who don't realise that 'all living things' includes humans who aren't the same colour as you.

thats unfair on pagans man, they aren't all headbanging far right odinists or whatever

No but there's a worrying correlation between the two IME.

Of course some pagans are not fascist or racist in any way. Some of them are just your common-or-garden twats.

This presumably being a different David Cameron who told the Times in 2008

Parents who pretend that they have Christian beliefs in order to win places in church schools are doing the best for their children, David Cameron believes.

The Tory leader refuses to criticise the “middle-class parents with sharp elbows”. Asked for his views on the families accused of playing the system, he says: “I think it’s good for parents who want the best for their kids. I don’t blame anyone who tries to get their children into a good school. Most people are doing so because it has an ethos and culture. I believe in active citizens.”

I wouldnt claim we a fully secular country either.
Christianish perhaps?
Or recovering christians perhaps
Nearly post christian

I do get irritated when Christians claim possession of basic moral concepts such as 'do unto others...' as if Christianity invented the idea.

That irritates me greatly too. Especially when some xtians (and I'm not suggesting all do this) argue you can't be moral without being xtian. I've had some heated rows with people who've tried that one with me.

You know, this is the sort of thing one might expect from an American Republican politician.

And he wants British people to be more evangelical, too. Maybe he fancies himself as a new Oliver Cromwell.

He was pretty much roundly-mocked in the media for his little power-play (which is what this is - a punt at a section of the electorate, in the run-up to the General Election in 13 months' time.
