Bastardbury - the Tory Festival

"Liberal educators such as George Galloway and Nigel Farage are loathed by the BBC because both men respect equal freedom for all people," said Morrissey.

But if this is anything to go by, there's more chance of Moz getting back with Johnny than teaming up with George.

You forgot to mention his pro-Farage and pro- Le Pen views.

Look, I'm aware he fails the middle class left test. But this is a good thing.

Incidentally, the fact that he's pro-brexit (rather than pro-Farage) places him squarely alongside the majority of the working class.

As for Le Pen the comment was actually about the media and the agenda they serve and as such was an attack on the institutions of the elite.

It's his lack of middle class liberalism - and the fact that he doesn't see it as in any way progressive - that confuses and angers people like you.

Yeah, I know that now. Just sucks a bit when a musician whose work you like turns out to be off. Like when I first listened to one of Fear Factory's then-new albums and one of the songs had lyrics about 9/11 Truther nonsense.

Could be worse, Noxion. Although many would say this is a good thing regardless, I have been unable to face a single second of Roy Harper's semi-melodious warbling since his paedo tendencies have become so woefully overt (not that they were ever terribly well-hidden...but willful blindness in the face of fandom etc...)

A tiny bit over-aggressive, this, and it gives you away. He's only a pop singer, you know.

He's quite unambiguously a pro-Farage pop singer, though.

FWIW, I actually quite like a bit of Morrissey provided he doesn't speak. I've put him of the shelf between Cocteau and Larkin.

All middle class liberals are required to hold one of the following positions:

1. I like his music, especially the early stuff, but I simply cannot abide his awful politics.
2. I used to love him, especially the early stuff, but I am now going to renounce him so that I can do some virtue signalling.
3. Coming from Surrey I've always preferred dub step and don't understand what the fuss is with Morrissey. Despite understanding nothing I can say with certainty that he's a racist.

None of your bluster explains his appearance on the poster by the way.

apart from his racism

you seem to desperately want him to remain on a pedestal

Not at all. My frustration is a) The glib, lazy and inaccurate middle class left analysis and b) the failure to understand and locate where he's coming from, where it comes from and why it's important. It's a similar frustration as when middle class lefts casually write off 17 million people.

There are loads of valid criticisms of him - his lunatic views re animals, his misanthropy, his tired creativity, his flirtation with gang culture - but they get lost in the crap

he said that 'you can't help but feel that the Chinese are a subspecies'. You can't really get away from that

reason enough to think of him as a bastard and worthy of appearing on this silly poster

Reason enough to see where his loon animal right politics leads. Iirc the comments were directly related to them eating or farming something he disapproved of.

ETA - its already been established that he's anti Tory

And here is on racism:

"I abhor racism and oppression or cruelty of any kind and will not let this pass without being absolutely clear and emphatic … Racism is beyond common sense and has no place in our society"

Not sure I think your analysis is all that close to the mark either, tbf. His misanthropy is central to his work. Silly thing to criticise him for, if you like his work.

I've got far too many albums at home to re-interrogate their creators every few years for bad politics/bad attitudes I was too slow to pick up on years ago :( :(

Easiest just to not listen to some of them for years instead </lazy-arsed non-excuse ;) >

Why would you? I still put Morrissey on. Had a blast of Southpaw Grammar after seeing this thread. He's magnificent at his best. Why deny yourself because he's also a bit of a dick?
