Bangers chat

I haven't been here for a while :) I've still got my bangers, two are probably making $$ because they're vehicles with value. All 3 are solid tbh, and are still all excellent; different horses for different courses etc..

That patrol/ maverick I bought about 5 years ago? It's tripled in value cos it's a great vehicle. Yay to having one, I wont be selling it.

Not sure if this counts as a banger.. didn't cost much. brum brum

You don't look old enough to drive!

I'm sure I sure that recently on television in the "yellow car club" at the end of wheelers and dealers when mike and Elvis flogged a yellow golf they had just completed.

The end of the show showed them driving into an area full of yellow cars from old beetles to brand new Aston's. Must have been 30 + cars there. The trotter van wasn't there, I don't think.

When is a banger not a banger?
Nearly 50, just 100 miles on the car and virtually concourse condition Museum puzzled by 1970s classic car in pristine condition

tbf were ever he had it must of been quite a set up

most true barn finds are rat nest beyond recoverable messes

ok if its a 3.5 million after restoration old supercar but not a Victor

My car (golf) has thrown up an engine management light which is amber. It appears this could be related to a multitude of faults.

Only issue is it disappeared yesterday after a relatively fast motorway run. I'm thinking I keep the diagnostic check I have booked in later this month to get to the bottom of the issue. Anything else people would consider here?

We had this issue with our Astra. I'd just turn off the light. Eventually it became an issue. Changing the air filter cured the problem

Put my banger in for an mot knowing that the speedo and tacko dont work. It failed on handbrake so a couple of new disks/pads. Retest and a pass! speedo still fucked

Hi! Long time reader of thread, seldom post. My faithful 17year old mx5 developed a death rattle last week (bottom ends fucked) its not worth and i'm not willing to replace the engine. Just a bit sad and needed somewhere to vent.

That is sad. Scotty Kilmer is always a bit scathing about older Mazda engine quality, maybe a bit unfairly normally. How many miles on it? New engine from a scrapyard and a cheapo local type to fit it def not worth it?

If its in good shape otherwise it might be worth it if you can get it done on a budget. I know its less common in the UK but in the US cars get new engines all the time. 17 years old isnt thattttt old really.

Otherwise if in decent nick you might consider selling it whole via a MX5 Facebook group for parts. Theres a lot of fans of those cars. Youd get a lot more than 400ish quid scrap.

Is it a diesel? I would buy an OBD2 diagnostic tool for 40 quid on Amazon and look at whats going on yourself if there's no decent garage locally that will just have a quick look? You should def get a proper check but those tools are great for telling you possible issues.. some of which like a new air filter are easy as pie to fix.

It is petrol. My local garage could only clear the code but couldn't read it. Going to VW specialist after Easter who can scan and do the work if any is required.

I have abandoned my cheap banger search. Used car prices are silly now. I did the numbers and it not worthwhile unless it’s free. I have upgraded my family car to something a little newer with more space for expeditions

I have an obd2 reader, but can you recommend a good app for processing the results? This thing connects over wifi, but the first couple apps I tried gave me no useful info without purchase. I don't expect something for nothing, but it's impossible to tell which apps are any good.

Only 77k. No such thing as a cheap engine, especially when you've no way of knowing of what you're getting.

Since I posted, a mate has been in my ear about it and I've been ringing round about a rebuild because I'm an idiot 🤷

If you have a scout around the dealers, you might find they have a trade in they want to get shot of?

if the light's stopped showing (and assuming it still lights up when you first turn the key and everything lights up) it may not be anything much at all.

do you get any other message come up anywhere, or just the orange light?

i've had a couple of times when i've had orange light and the message 'anti pollution faulty' (petrol citroen) after i've been in slow traffic and maybe haven't changed down as early as i should have, but it's gone away after a couple of days, and apparently it's something that citroens do if they are having a little sulk...

Check the packet or the info for the reader you have. It should come with an app. You might need a code. Check on Amazon or wherever you bought it.

Personally I'd recommend getting a wired one that does it on the screen for simplicity. But yours should work ok once set up.

Sure there's cheap engines to be had check the facebook groups etc. You might pay a grand for engine and work but your car is worth quite a lot more than that currently.

If you scrap it youre losing a good 1500-2000 IMO. Might as well be patient and get the engine looked at first too... have you tried an MX5 specialist? It might be worth them having a look.

Don't do facebook or any of that plus i don't like the idea of buying an engine off a random. Been chatting to some nice engineers on the phone past couple of days and looking into sorting it. Its staying on the drive for now.

Reason i was thinking f getting rid is because i feel strongly that i don't have the mental capacity to have it sat there, very broken and i can actually get by without a car (i only did a shade over 3.5k last year and a lot of that was work. Plus i can use a work van, which is free, but also annoying with my car on the drive as parking the van behind it is annoying (cba to explain driveway logistics)

Anyway...its not over yet

Banger went for it MOT this week, had put aside 500 quid just in case. The old bugger passed! However, the wheel nuts on the front passenger were only hand tight apparently and they were shocked I got there ok. My fault about the nuts but blagged no knowledge. It needs to last just another 18 months
