Waterloo Station - pictures, chat and stories

Just seen this thread. My late father was a train driver based out of Waterloo and before that a fireman on the last steam trains out of 9 Elms. Living in Batersea at the time, he'd sometimes go to the pub after work, still covered in soot, knotted hanky on head. I think there was still an operational turn table near by as I'm sure my uncle has mentioned you could see it from the houses and flats round there.

Not for several years but must have been in and through Waterloo hundreds of times. Once in the cab with my dad down to Bournemouth. I wore a shirt and BR cap to fane looking like a (very young) trainee if spotted by a signalman...

There was a rail workers club under Waterloo station, would be there quite often as a family. This closed when the Eurostar moved there. The newer offices, rest rooms, roster boards etc, looked like a space station or something. All silver and strip lighting.

More on 9 Elms history.
They still overnight some steam loco specials at nine elms. This is a print we have on our walls, an early pressie to Mrs tag. nine elms, the last hours.

:)

1950-ish OS map here - looks like there was a turntable in the South west corner of Waterloo

Although the one at nine elms was much closer to houses / post-war flats

:)

from what i have read, there was a fair amount of that going on in the later years, and assorted dubious 'test runs' from depots on sundays...

umm - is there anything left of nine elms? thought they had built (including 'new covent garden') on all of it. are you thinking stewarts lane? (which was different - ex LBSCR and at least partly still there)

Doesn't he always put mice or rats in as a sort of signature?

No rodents found

no, terence cuneo was the one who always put a 🐭 somewhere - as marked in the statue that was at waterloo for a while

Great link. As someone who lived in that area for years, the local history stuff interested me.

Bit of a digression from Waterloo Station, but for those of you who know or remember Brunswick House (on the Vauxhall one-way) the story of how it was acquired by a reclamation company is a good one!

Fraud by fake signatures! And fairly recent.
