Bangers chat

I'm looking for a banger.
When ULEZ comes in, I'll have to store the Saab 900 away until March 2028 when it's exempt so this needs to last four years.
Ulez-compliant, an estate (working gardener), petrol not diesel. Don't want a van as they get broken into
I'm naturally drawn to Volvo V70 or a Saab 95. What else should I be looking at?

Mondeo?

petrol estate jag x type a posh mondeo
a saab 95 is just a posh Vectra really

:hmm:
I often hear this about the X-type, but how much of it, apart from the floor pan, is actually Mondeo? There's a few minor parts, but major parts?

Bought my Amazon from this seller who runs an old Volvo business, so reckon this would be lovely in the flesh. :)

Probabaly totally of no use at all, out of budget etc., but worth posting for a lovely ULEZ exempt estate car. :D

about 20% ford mondeo part used in the x-type the mother had a 2.2 d 09 plate for a number of years she was quite happy with it

Fair play, she's a beaut. A bit rich for my budget, looking 3k max at the mo. I'll hit up the trader and see what they've got though 👍🏼

Volvo v50 too?

Lotsnof of older BMWs always available too. could be thirsty and or have the usual issues.

Is reliabillty the most important thing for you considering its for work?

For some reason I've always thought this thread was about sausages 😄 and just walked straight past........

Up until I bought my van in 2014 I always bought bangers and if they lasted more then 6 months then I was in profit......they always lasted at least a year.

Reliable is necessary yep.

It's short trips for work, within 5mile radius, hefting tools and compst and garden waste etc. Not so keen on BMW or Merc, unless you're back into E30 touring age which ulez knocks out!

Bugger. MOT fail.

One sidelight not working, and it's not just the bulb. I don't even use the poxy sidelights. I just put the headlights on, as soon as visibility is poor.

Just looked it up. The fuse for that light is the fuse for two other lights, so there would be three lights not working.

Thanks though. It was worth checking.
Get a garage to check the wiring. Could be a loose connection?

If there's an actual piece thats broken should be an easy fix or a part from ebay to sort it.

I'm exchanging emails with a mobile auto electrician who may be able to do it Monday. He was recommended on my local Transporter FB group.

For all Facebooks failings, the campervan/transporter groups are really helpful.

I'm on a VW golf forum and the regulars there are very helpful too despite probably have read the same queries countless times.
Which one? I've recently bought a GTD and have joined a group but it's not very interesting unless you want to look at pics of Golfs

Tbh id be tempted by a MPV like a Mazda 5 or a Corolla Verso or something. Youd get a decent example for 2k and money to maintain it. Loads of space and decent reliability at a low cost.

A Honda accord estate would be my next option for an estate that's solid but kinda cool. Youd struggle to get a petrol post 2009 one though for 3k I think but you'd def get an older one.

As you have a car you clearly love already and you just need a workhorse you might also want to give the Mondeo/Focus estate serious consideration as it would be so much easier to find one :D

I’m fated when it comes to this van of mine.

One of the number plate lights wasn’t working. It wasn’t an mot fail, just a “fix as soon as possible”

Thought it would be an easy enough job. Bought new bulbs, put them in. Neither bloody working now!

I’m tempted to upgrade the banger for a decent car. It got through it’s MOT with a couple of minor points. It’s a cracking motor but a bit small for my needs

Update. Bought new LED lights to replace the bulb sockets.

Put them in.

Nothing.

I now have the whole the whole plastic surround over the rear number plate ordered. £135 OEM.

I have also sent a begging email to the auto electrician.

In 13 days I need to be on the road. If I can't fix the poxy number plate lights I have to pray it doesn't rain when I'm driving, so that I need to put lights on, and, failing that, that I don't end up in front of a copper.
