I use the owners forums a lot. There's a really good local one down here. That's how I found the "auto electrician who knows his way around a transporter".

But I just decided to get a "proper, new" part rather than a second hand one off a breaker that might go wrong next year.

always go with a mechanic but vw has a big community for almost all variation of motor so maybe tell you what to check first

The Germans are masters of the mechanical. The electronic, not so much. Even on the mechanical front, they can be guilty of complexity for complexity's sake. I still remember the first time I took the inner door panel off the car and thought "Jesus christ, there's a cuckoo clock hidden in my door!"

I’m fated when it comes to this van of mine.

One of the number plate lights wasn’t working. It wasn’t an mot fail, just a “fix as soon as possible”

Thought it would be an easy enough job. Bought new bulbs, put them in. Neither bloody working now!

Got a new number plate housing. Spent today dismantling the rear door. “Slightly frustrated” by a bit of fun with a spline bolt which decided not to undo, but detached entirely from the old housing and refused to budge from the panel. Ended up using a hammer!
Put it all back together, but incorrectly it seems, as the rear doors won’t open now!

I think having and googling car issues is like when you have a ailment - not good for peace of mind.

Current issue is car is not getting to temperature. Previously it always got to temp quickly. It's either a sensor or the thermostat. Not ideal when I have a big trip coming up.

Found somewhere that will look at it today. 3 places all fully booked until 15th may!

A painful call from the mechanic: A new thermostat housing is required. Not cheap but I've told them to proceed.

I've been onto VW in the hope that they will contribute - car is two months out of warranty.

I am with car again. Felt strange not having outside but at least the buses are regular and good value.

The positive is I found a very good mechanic that doesn't come with the premium prices a specialist or a VW dealer charge.

My neighbour is selling his 2000 mk2 MX5 for 750 quid. I'm quite tempted. Bit of a project car. Will probably need a new soft top. Some quite bad rust on one wheel arch area and paint issues. MOT expired so will wait to see what happens with that this week first... I'll ask the garage their verdict if possible too.

Could be a good project car and then either budget toy or make a bit of money. I would be keeping my 04 Corolla for now as my main car.

I'm looking for a banger.
When ULEZ comes in, I'll have to store the Saab 900 away until March 2028 when it's exempt so this needs to last four years.
Ulez-compliant, an estate (working gardener), petrol not diesel. Don't want a van as they get broken into
I'm naturally drawn to Volvo V70 or a Saab 95. What else should I be looking at?

my car needed a new radiator a month or two back, which as it's a 15 year old car, is the sort of thing you expect.

it got somewhat warm (not clouds of steam, but fan staying on some time after i'd switched off) at the weekend after a 3 mile journey.

e2+2: is it really a 1.2 litre engine? if not I might be interested if you want to part and it is Ulez compliant

It's a Kangoo. So crap it's not even recognisable!! I'm open to chrome and lowering

You're mixing up my post with the MX5 one above. I've just bought this today as it is Ulez-compliant, so not for sale! It is a 1.2 though, 16valve, no less. I'd rather have an MX5...

Mine was 20% up but I think I left as was as I didn’t have the energy to change it at the time and by and large have been happy with the (big name) insurer rather than some random website. Will be looking around next year though
