Ban on smoking in cars carrying children backed by Lords

As if cars aren't a far worse threat to childrens respitatory health ayway. than passive smoving. Only the most irreseponsible of
parenets would chong would choung away in a car full of kids and like the laws's going to stop them

i don't think this should have anything to do with whether it is right or wrong to smoke in a car with a child. Why, as adults, are we no longer considered capable enough to make these informed decisions ourselves? Instead, we have another law thrust upon us telling us what we can and cannot do. (And no, i'm not a smoker :hmm:)

the sad truth is lots of people are that selfish they aren't capable. making it law is not going to do a thing, how could they possibly enforce this? encourage people to ring a phoneline and snitch? I wouldnt put it past them tbh

If only they had the balls, I'm not sure if the government can afford for people to quit smoking. How much of a gaping hole in tax revenue would that leave? Could the NHS even survive?
Smoking revenues exceed £8,000,000,000 per annum. That is quite a few hospitals. And smokers die earlier than non smokers so they cost less in pension payments.

They are voting on this in the commons tonight. Labour are apparently whipping their MPs to vote in favour, the tories and LibDems I think have a free vote. It is expected to go through.

fucking nanny state wankers.
Yeah. More nanny-state, divide-and-rule bullshit to distract folk.

These twats have been at it for years: the last car I bought (2004) doesn't even have ashtrays - let alone a lighter, ffs!

Next thing you know, the twats will be telling you you can't smoke at home if you have kids.

Do we need a law on this?

It might be quite difficult to enforce.

Just another attack on smokers perhaps.

What is next, no smoking in your own home?

It's a really good idea to protect children: but given the limited time that govt has to deal with the various Bills, maybe they should prioritize the economy etc, instead of these sorts of things that might be seen as a smokescreen? [jesus: I made a pun].

Question 2: if it becomes law and the cops catch some of the evil parents: do they get a fine; or are their kids taken away; or both?

When can we get a law making it illegal to smoke when there are pets present in the car? Your dog didn't ask for a cigarette.

Yeah my Dad used to say this. It's bollocks.

I'm always a bit iffy about this tiresome making of more and more laws but this is harder to object to than a lot of them.
Probably a test case for stopping smoking in the home, though.

If you actually want anti-government riots, go ahead. There is a line, and that is it.

I'm sure the Police have better things to do than pull up a roll-up chuffing driver with his roll up chuffing 15 year old kid in the back

Quite. Even the inflated worst case scenario, that the health fascists claim that smokers cost the NHS, is way below that figure.

If they tried that they'd have the grey beards like me rioting as well as the usual malcontents. :D
First they came for the people who actually had something to complain about... Then they came for those who demand the right to poison their children. :hmm:

I don't know about riots. I think the government is trying hard to make itself as useless, petty and irrelevant as possible. People (and the police too, I'd guess) will just end up ignoring their fuckwitted decrees.

It's probably part of harmonising with the EU.
