Assange seeks asylum in Ecuador embassy, London

Ah from earlier up the page

The MSM version seems to run along the lines that he is running scared and has refused to come back, which is clearly bollocks.
He has refused to go back to Sweden - he set a date to meet the prosecutors whilst in sweden and promised to attend if let to the UK and then refused to come back. Please, do some reading on this. You are arguing he wants to go to sweden when the whole thing is about him trying to stop him going to sweden.

I think he's a bit of an egoist and a twat, but quite frankly if anyone professing he should 'do the right thing' was in his position i doubt they'd be pontificating in the same manner as they are on here.

What do you mean? You appear to know nothing of the case, or of the posts on this thread.

I hear he was all for staying in Sweden, but then a chef shouted bork bork bork at him and he ran off.

No, i said I read that he offered numerous times to go back and the offer was turned down. Is that not true?

I said id not been following it (I have an 18 month old to chase around after these days) so i dont have time. I asked a quesiton and gave an opinion, if you dont like it ignore me.

What part of it? And you're a year behind. Can you tell me what the source is as well please?

Jesus, why do you always answer posters questions with more questions. If you'd bothered to read my first post you'd have said id not been following it. If you cant be arsed to correct me without your belicose finger wagging nonsense, then just don't reply. Im sure you have better things to do.

He offered to fly back in on the 9th and 10th of October and she refused saying that it was a weekend, he offered to fly back on the 11 th October,
Then what did he do afterwards - after the request to detain him on suspicion was granted? He refused to come back? Why would he do that if he's the open person willing to help that you suggest?

I'm sure that you do. He made an agreement to return to sweden to answer legal stuff at a time when charges were not in place. This is the stuff he agreed to come back and talk about. When a semi-formal charging process was set in place he reneged on this agreement - and has fought to stay away ever since. He has never, not a single time offered to come back and face charges. I'm sorry if me getting angry at you for thinking this was the case, that the opposite of what has happened is what really happened - two years down the line - has slightly annoyed you.

Thanks for the explanation, you're much nicer when you do that than talk down to people like they've just become attached to the bottom of your shoe ;) Apologies x

I reckon he's dug his way out already a la that film The Bank Job. And left behind a mannequin that looks like him. Probably.

It could be, that nothing is going to happen for a while: Jozsef Mindszenty, Hungarian Catholic cardinal, spent 15 years in the US embassy in Budapest from 1956-1971

Though I suppose if the UK government is going to recind embassy status, Assange will not take as long to get as that! here is hoping anyhow.

Big difference between an US embassy and an Equadorian embassy. One would be massive with gardens and the other is a just a flat.

I don't understand why he thinks he will be extradited to the USA from Sweden. Why haven't the USA applied for extradition from Britain? We're certainly not any less likely than Sweden to grant it, if that's what they want.

What am I missing?

I think it is a good point. And in fact Britain has agreements with the US which means extraditing someone from here to there is easier than trying to do it from there to here. Who knows why they have been silent.

He doesn't want to answer the rape charges?

Then why don't Sweden just give a commitment that he will not be extradited to the U.S?

How can they? If it goes to court then the government can't overturn that. They can say "he won't be extradited" but it's a court that decides.

I am no expert on Swedish law, but I can see why he would not want to go back to Sweden.

Isn't there a clause in the extradition treaty about not giving people over to countries that have the death penalty or where the form of imprisonment amounts to cruel treatment?

Swedes can't under terms of their extradition treaty is what I've read - i.e. if the US present a case for extradition that meets the treaty reqs then off he goes.

It probably works like that thing in brass eye, where criminals were able to carry drugs legally by attaching them to a helium baloon.

Try to think of diplomatic immunity as the balloon, asssange as the "drug basket", and the embassy as the balloon. With the uk gov as the two coppers walking past, powerless to act.
