See post above yours

Thraigo pretending to be in the know. Sweet FA's post wasn't even a clue as to who I was, it was, like he said just du du duuuh.

Mind you, I did think it was in a similar vein to what the local kids used to sing at a mate of mine evry time she left the house - It was when "Smack Dat" was in the charts so a few years back now, but anyway, whenever my colleague showed her face, all the delightful kids used to burst into a chorus of "Smack Rat..."

It was funny in a way. You probably had to be there though.

My dad had a small cock. Nosh. Game over.

(fit with other victims mums/dads as he can find)

Seriously, we'll fucking murder you in the real world you coward.

Haystacks, I've spent the last year cowering under the table , fist in my mouth, rocking back and forth making involuntary "perished bellows" type terror noises.

And yet fuck all's happened. That was a fairly unambiguous threat of violence, big guy - "A man of word and not of deed is like a garden full of weeds".

You're no-one, Haystacks, you're a Brimson, a fat-titted jobdodger. You scrumpypuddled dickwank.

An unambiguous threat to kill (although I'll accept murder was a euphamism), but it can only work as a euphamism for violence. Fat nobhead.

He'll have probably meant 8den.

Nah, that's not fair.

I searched back and it turns out in the hours immediately after Savile carked it, I was admittedly totally ignorant of the horrific extent of his crimes. To me he just seemed like this kind of weird, bug-eyed old guy. I was totally shocked when the full extent of it came out. Not quite as shocked as with Harris but, y'know.

Obviously, had I known about the horrors he had inflicted on so many innocent people, I would have had the moral fortitude, the backbone, the honest-to-goodness salt of the earth decency to keep my mouth shut until the day he died and then crack some puns on an internet forum.
Cos he looked the type, didn't he?

Should have remembered the old adage 'no smoke without fire.

As some attempt at recompense, I will give discokermit my full support if he wants to organise to destroy the life of any weird, bug-eyed middle-aged 'looks the type' types out there.

Especially if he puts it on youtube, I'm sure it will pan out famously for him.

Fair enough.

Aha you see, no, thanks to this reality distortion field we've got on loan from a well known brand.

There's definitely not at least one forum on here where consumerist, materialist shit has been unashamedly celebrated on rotation for ten plus years despite the substance of it being ever more diminished, barely incremental water-treading crap. Not here, no sir.

But cars are the bad stuff and deserve full bore contempt. Yuuuuup.

Bullshit. Cars aren't bad, although a minority of drivers do deserve "full bore contempt" for having all the skill of a ham-handed geriatric, and the road-sense of a seven week dead corpse.

I re-read most of that thread last night. diskokermit was spot-on there as he was here.

Of course they're not bad, they're inanimate machines. And of course some drivers deserve that because (for now) drivers are people and people are sometimes numpties.

But there's a beautiful irony free disconnect in play when - no great subtlety required here - someone can in one breath evangelise the latest incremental step forward in shiny mobile phones made out of rare earth materials basically stolen from some bankrupt shithole poverty nation and cobbled into a consumer product in a suicide-benetted Chinese factory, and then in the next turn feral to carp on about how cars & car culture is this terrible thing. I mean Christ, compromise is fine and no one's got a perfect scorecard, but self awareness eh!

Personally I think it's fair game to pass comment on our consumerist society. I'm sure there are plenty of threads along that subject - people queuing days to get hold of the latest gadget etc.

From my POV I don't see any particular bias against car culture in this thread. Of course there's been a reaction where someone states that stabbing is a valid response to possible, and then only inconsequential damage. If you make over the top 'jokes' of violence, despite taking the piss you should expect reactions based on you assertions.

Infact is there any post on this thread that typifies someone claiming that car culture, or even the car is a 'terrible thing'?

On a broader sense I think that people can be far to quick to jump on labeling someone as 'anti car' when they simply question one of the various facets of car use. I don't think anyone presumes you are anti phone if you look at the various facets of phone ownership.

I don't disagree with most of that. Consumerism deserves comment, and you can do so whilst still being a consumer, since we're not required to behave in absolutes.

However there is a vein of anti-car, anti-motorist stuff on here, which itself is also fine, it's a political position, but not so much when one decides not to look at what the other hand is doing. If you're going to come after or even just sneer at cars for being selfish, pointless, destructive consumerism, you have to at least consider whether the stuff you engage in is similar.

The parallels with cars are obfuscated not least because you don't typically have to leave any of your other possessions out in the road at night, but I suspect most posters wouldn't be overjoyed if someone messed with their other trinkets, even in a superficial way.

Yup. I'm in agreement with you. There are plenty of well trodden blind spots with our actions and views.

I have wondered if there's anything that I own which I would resort to violence over. I doubt it. However if there was anything I possed which I knew would provoke such a reaction from me I certainly wouldn't leave it lying on the streets overnight - I'd be asking for trouble.

The object I can think of which I'm close to being obsessed over is my new bespoke shiney bike, which cost twice as much as my car. For this reason I don't leave it lying about on the streets.

Was for me circa 2007 when Guinea Bissau was in the news as a narco state and I decided to do a thread on it. Thread may have ended up deleted even it was that bad.

I remember some decent ding-dongs a few years before that.

It was the cokeheads that got into the worst rages if someone mentioned their tipple of choice wasn't produced from the feathers of happy free-range chickens.

...on this thread you have complained about the terms:

"borderline psycho" #138
"psychotic" #145
"borderline psychopathic" #175
"boderline psychopaths" #197
"psychotic" #206

I'd just like to repost something from another thread which was addressed to both you and editor but hasn't had any response. Sorry to repeat the post but it's very relevant to this thread.

"Generally any kind of stabbing rampage over minor damage would be seen as an indicator of all not being well with someone, but I'd have to run a quick survey on all the posters here and then boldly declare an opinion on their behalf to be sure."

re. 'borderline psychotic behaviour'

For the sale of reducing prejudice against people with serious mental health issues and making people with these conditions feel less excluded I also support the idea of using these words a bit more carefully, for the following reasons:

Psychosis is most commonly linked to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia and is not necessarily - or even very often - linked to being violent. Psychosis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Psychopathy on the other hand does have a linked to violent behaviour. Psychopathy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psychotic, as well as its original medical meaning (first reference 1885) is also used in a more loose manner, eg:
adjective
1.
Psychiatry. characterized by or afflicted with psychosis.
Synonyms: (in nontechnical usage) insane, psychopathic, lunatic, mentally ill; mad, disturbed, deranged, demented, non compos mentis.
Antonyms: sane; compos mentis, clearheaded, lucid.
2.
Psychiatry. of or relating to psychosis: psychotic symptoms;
psychotic delusion.
3.
(loosely) mentally unstable:
The man who threw a stone through the convenience store windowmust be psychotic.
Synonyms: loony, crazy, nutty, nuts, bonkers; kooky, cuckoo, daft, batty, screwy, potty.
4.
intensely upset, anxious, or angry; crazy:
My dad gets so psychotic when I come home even a little bit late.
Synonyms: crazed, furious, enraged, wrathful, irate, incensed, infuriated; livid, pissed off.

source: the definition of psychotic

However I'd hope that people here on urban75 we aspire to a slightly more socially-aware level of language use than some of the above usages, even if they are still commonly used and understood by the average man-in-the-street and even when there is no intention to cause offense, humilate or exclude any individual or group of people.

Here's a Guardian article about the general issue: Time to change the language we use about mental health | Mind your language

*Sometimes* people with bipolar and schizophrenia (and other illnesses) are violent: "It is true, of course, that any psychotic or neurotic person can commit a violent act, but only because any person at all can commit such an act. The fact is that violence is an uncommon complication of mental illness" link: The Relationship Between Violence and Psychotic Disorders or Psychosis and Violence Aren’t Strongly Linked or People with schizophrenia are far more likely to harm themselves than be violent toward the public. Violence is not a symptom of schizophrenia.

However with "psychopathy" and "sociopathy" there is often (although not always) a link with violent behaviour, eg: Psychopathy | Psychology Today

nb
About 2.4% of people around the world have had a diagnosis of bipolar disorder at some point in their lifetime source: U.S. has highest bipolar rate in 11-nation study - CNN.com
About 1% of people have a diagnosis of schizophrenia Schizophrenia Facts and Statistics

Moreover, although I don't have exact figures I do know the rates of both of these are a lot higher in Brixton, for various reasons.

Yes, I've read that and liked it elsewhere too.

A good post. :)

It's easy to be anti car if you live in a city with a fully functioning transport system.
It's not really. People are still terrified of any restriction on motorists' privilege even when motorists are in the minority. You should check out the Loughborough Junction road closures thread.

Of course they're not bad, they're inanimate machines. And of course some drivers deserve that because (for now) drivers are people and people are sometimes numpties.

The worst driver I've ever ridden with was utterly non self-aware, and believed himself to be a "good driver" frustrated by the misplacement of lamp-posts, bollards and kerbs.

I think you raise a good point regarding "portable" technology, especially as I'm sure that only the most ignorant of folk are not aware that Coltan comes from very few deposits, the largest of which is in a nation kept at a perpetual war footing for one reason or another. :(

Depends what you mean by "fully functioning", to be fair.

Taking London as an example. It's pretty easy to get from any point A to any point B within a reasonable time with departures happening every ten mins for buses, every twenty mins for trains and every few minutes for tubes. And travelling by car can be hampered by gridlock.

Well it isn't really anything like that outside of cities. Apart from the heavy traffic at peak times.
