Amanda Knox Is Innocent

I can now identify a Welsh accent after watching that show about a ghost, werewolf and vampire who share a flat in Bristol.

There isn't a single "Welsh accent," there are many. I don't know if you think I have a Welsh accent, but most people in Wales would call it "Keyardiff."

You sounded pretty neutral to me. I'm thinking of that kid, he's a young werewolf. Also the girl in Misfits. It's all big round 'oohs'.

That's a bumpkin Camarthenshire accent, which is how most foriegners think all Welsh people talk. But in fact there are massive differences between Jacks, Gogs, Valleys--even between different valleys--and that's even before we get to the language issue.

To me, this is Welsh. Tom McNair. Lives just outside Barry.

That's a Cardiff accent. Very different from other Welsh regional accents.

However the most important determinant of accent in Wales, as throughout the UK, is not geography but class. I believe that makes Britain unique. It certainly tells you a lot about British society.

Personally, I felt that I'd accomplished something just being able to pick out one Welsh accent. Before, I'd have thought that these people were Irish or something. Or maybe from Yorkshire or who the fuck knows where in England?

But... Michael Socha [the kid] and Lauren Socha, are brother and sister.

They're also actors.

Listening to it again, he only goes into Irish at the end, when he says "are we supposed to be able to understand her."

The woman's a Brummie.

This clip also provides a good example of a Black British accent.

I thought of this as being welsh, too. Turns out her name is Socha too. Small world, eh? <snip>
No way - that's yer common or garden chav accent as heard and spoken about 5 years ago. One of my neighbours has the same accent and he sounds ridiculous - halfway between yokel and mockney.

On a fine day, I can see your front door from my front door.
