Met Police getting record emergency calls hours after UK-wide problem with 999 service

Police, fire and ambulance services had earlier urged people to call 101 - but BT later said its back-up system had solved the issue.

BT are reporting the 999 system is down across most of the country. This is effecting most blue light services (Police Fire Ambulance Coastguard and the smaller ones). Apparently 101 hasn't failed.

Never known this to happen on a national scale before. Hopefully BT will get it back up soon.

I think when you dial 112 the local exchange just presents it as any other 999 call to Glasgow.

Yeah. plus if that were still working they’d simply be advising people to call that, instead of 101/111

Given it’s a Sunday morning my guess would be an upgrade or cut over to new kit or a trial / test of something which turned out to be ‘suboptimal’…

Be interesting to see what caused this - its a pretty major fuck up whatever the root cause was.

I can hazard a guess - management laying off all the people who actually know how things work and how to keep them running, and replacing with cheaper people who stand no chance.

I just called 999 to see if it was working for me. They answered very quickly but appeared to be very cross with me when I explained it was just a test.

Glad to hear it, of course when making a call to the Police persons the response has always been not insignificantly dependent on who is making the call.....
