70% of Americans oppose the mosque

If a mosque goes up in east London then so what? There's Muslims here. The Olympics is fucking annoying because it's being paid for by public funds and businesses will be the ones to gain from it. Property owners might gain too but I'm not one of them and I live in the area.

my sentiments precisely.

250,000 might not seem like a lot to you but when Johnny is clutching at straws it's a huge number. ;)

The next time 250,000 people show up for an antiwar protest or what have you, we'll be able to dismiss it as not a lot of people, and not in any way representative of public opinion.

250k people signing an online petition and 250k people actually getting off their arses and going on a demo are two entirely different propositions.

Obviously completely different. Getting off the computer or the tv on a saturday afternoon, marching and listening to a speech for a couple of hours, then going to the pub, is evidence of a deep commitment, and not only that, it's an obvious indication that the bulk of the population is behind them as well.

It's obvious that 250,000 people supporting a cause you believe in, is a significant number; while 250,000 supporting a cause you disagree with, is an insignificant number.

Signing a petition takes even less effort than making a post on Urban75 - how many people go on 100,269 demonstrations in their lifetimes?

Cheers! I'll ignore every poll ever until they ask every member of a population.

Whatever you're comfortable with. My original point, and the one I've been making throughout, is that a 250,000 petition, is some indication that people outside the immediate neighborhood, were aware of the mosque proposal. I've said nothing about how many people in UK might oppose or be in favor of the mosque.

johnny, for all you know, and as you haven't established otherwise, that's 250,000 people all called 'sebastian clagybollox', or similar.
You don't know the precise wording, the people conducting it, the environment/context of polling............

to reiterate; whoever said there isn't islamophobia in the UK? sure there is, or else the knuckledraggers of the BNP & EDL wouldn't exist. I JUST find it pretty sad - and immature actually, nursery-level debating - that it is impossible that we can't have a debate about the US without JC3 poping up and saying " Oh well, the UK's just as bad cos of XYZ". This is the World forum, we have a separate UK Forum

Who is 'we'?

What I was saying is that before people start making mendacious comments about 'how can americans be like that?', they should first ask the question of why their own countrymen are acting in the exact same fashion.

How is the question 'how can americans be like that?' mendacious?

a relatively small, obsessive proportion of them are. If you are on a mission to get a petition like that going - as the people behind it clearly were - you go to the nutter fringe first.
And I note no comment on the qualifying doubts I raised in #165 on this thread.
I've worked in opinion-polling, Johnny, it's fairly easy to twist it any way you want

I'll bet the proportions opposing your mosque were just as high. The only difference is that 250,000 americans haven't signed any petitions on the matter.
sorry, you're talking bollocks - they weren't - at as grassroots level, the mainstream response was a huge shrug of indifference.
