That was the reality of life until the mid-1970s, when Ceefax came along.

Ceefax was the internet before the internet was even thought of – the first 24/7 news service anywhere, and in its heyday it attracted more than 20 million viewers a week.

Basically the only modern tech my dad ever got and enjoyed - he wasn't one for cashpoints, mobile phones, apps, etc - but he loved Ceefax and teletext (wasn't that the rival service?) . He used it mostly for the horse racing - he'd call up the pages in the morning , work out who he fancied, then head for the betting shop to throw away his money
