The first ever mobile phone call was made 50 years ago today.

The device used by Cooper in Manhattan on 3 April 1973 was a prototype of Motorola's DynaTAC 8000X - the first commercially available mobile. It cost $3,995 ($12,000 today) and took 10 hours to charge for half an hour of call time.

How times have changed

Ceefax was launched 50 years ago, today.

Imagine a world where you could not call up the latest football results, news headlines or weather forecast whenever you want.

That was the reality of life until the mid-1970s, when Ceefax came along.

Ceefax was the internet before the internet was even thought of – the first 24/7 news service anywhere, and in its heyday it attracted more than 20 million viewers a week.

Basically the only modern tech my dad ever got and enjoyed - he wasn't one for cashpoints, mobile phones, apps, etc - but he loved Ceefax and teletext (wasn't that the rival service?) . He used it mostly for the horse racing - he'd call up the pages in the morning , work out who he fancied, then head for the betting shop to throw away his money :hmm: :D

ORACLE was the ITV version launched in 1978, Teletext took over the service on ITV, C-4 & C-5, in 1993.
