50 years

I was on the 'Herald of Free Enterprise' 24 hours before it went down, we had already delayed our return from Amsterdam by a day, we had considered holding off for another day, fucking lucky we didn't. I was well stoned on that crossing, and my mate had dropped the last acid tab we had.

When that news broke on the TV, I had a serious shiver go down my spine, something I've never experienced before nor since.

I've probably told this before, but we were on the sailing before the fatal one.

We were posted back from Germany to the UK, so had to declare the car. The guy who went through customs in front of us was the son of Count Von Stauffenberg.

Also, coming up this Friday: the Brixton extension of the Victoria Line was officially opened by a "royal" I´ve never heard of ("Lady" Ogilvy, anyone?)

I was just listening to Electric Warrior by T Rex. 50 years old this year. I can remember the day I bought it on vinyl.

Johnny Walker played Get It On yesterday as it topped the UK charts this week 50 yrs ago.
(He doubled it up with another chart topper this week but from 1977, Donna Summer's I Feel Love)

Arthur Scargill: Battle of Saltley Gate a lesson in solidarity Arthur Scargill: Battle of Saltley Gate a lesson in solidarity
Fifty years ago today the picket at Saltley Gate ended.
It was a pivotal moment in the strength of trade unions. It would of course lead to attacks on workers that still resonate and continue today.
Several of my cousins and neighbours were involved and as a 14 year old the impression and lessons stayed with me all my working life.

As a footnote to this post. Yesterday I had to pay a visit to relatives in my old home town, on the way back home I called in the Asda local to get some bread.
I was amazed and delighted to bump into one of the old NUM officials from our local pit. He had been instrumental in getting miners, my family included down onto the picket line at Saltley Gate.
He also gave great support to our family following the death of my dad in 71.
His greeting of ‘hey up young un’ cheered me a lot, it doesn’t happen that often when you are 64.
He is now 93, and still kicking against the system.
Made my weekend seeing him.
