2016 Coup in Turkey?

BBC isn't saying much so will ask here - does anyone have any idea what faction is actually behind this? Erdogan suppressed the opposition and I know the army had a relatively strong secular mentality but how much of that has endured? And what about the rank and file? Any details or links on anything?

Dunno but wonder if the ex prime minister will show up.

Erdogan/AKP characterising it as Gemalist, explicitly. Other commentators, including Ankaralı Jan (@06JAnk) on Twitter describing it as text-book Kemalist. So I guess it's either niche faction or something in a broader context of Kemalist history, depending on your view.

Other commentators concentrating on potential impact on Syria - Turkish proxies plus IS cut off from Turkey, Manbij & Raqqa vulnerable, probably unsustainable.

Edit - Gulenist not Gemalist - late, etc.

Post #57 by Mr.Bishie suggests that the AKP are blaming Gulen's followers for this.

Aye, just heard that thrown into doubt on the BBC. Remember a while back when I went through a load of lectures and articles on Turkey which talked about how the Gulen movement was being forced out of public life - made it sound like a client system, more or less (not speculating as to whether it was good or bad for that). If it is growing out of that then it's not exactly likely to be great news. They're not a dominant force within society so they must have to deal with a backlash sooner or later. Could just be a throw of the dice before Erdogan pushed them further out.

e2a: I have the memory of a goldfish, my speculation may well be worthless.

He's urging people to take to the streets to protect democracy - what a cunt!

Regardless of the particular track record and horrors of Erdogan, its not unusual to make this request when trying to thwart a coup. It's usually a sign of desperation and that the coup is well advanced though.

I suppose this century the most obvious example of a coup being thwarted in part by such means would be Venezuela, and the most obvious failure Egypt.

I got the impression, and some Turkish mates seem to be saying the same thing, that they suspect it is Kemalist officers, but reckon Kemalism is a lot more popular in Turkey than the Gulenist movement, so Erdogan refers to it as Gulenist to try and undermine support

So, how many civil wars are we going to have underway before 31 Dec...?

No knowing if this will be one really. What's the division like in the military? I know Erdogan has been building up his own units, like the ones who've been terrorising Kurds, but are they a representative force? Or just a few guys with guns? What will Erdogan's clients and allies do? Plenty of them are, I thought, more pragmatic than ideological so would they fight for him or just accept a new regime?

General of first army saying his units not involved.
Troops ordered back from Iraq
Pro Isis telegram channels jubilant. The Syrian here with us (a Kurd) has had to stop reading them as he feels sick

All Jazeera have crossed to another station where they're interviewing someone via a smartphone, holding the screen up to the camera and with a radio mic in from of the speaker.

This is fucking weird.

Why would ISIS be happy about it? Polarisation and persecution of AKP supporters leading to radicalisation?

Sky appear to be showing live footage of civilians (?) being shot at on a bridge.
