Your daily cat and kitten news

Loving the updates.

Thanks, I am starting to get a bit concerned that they haven't eaten a thing since we left J's home with them at about 6pm last night, they have several plates of different wet foods dotted around the bedroom.

I managed to stroke Anakin's little face and head and offered him some of the treats that J gave me yesterday but he looked at me as if I was mad and didn't take them. I have left a few little piles of treats under the curtains. They are both under the curtains.

It's a long time for kittens to go without eating anything. Off out shortly to Pets@Home and Lidl - to pick up dry babycat food, other types of treats (lick-e-lix, treat sticks, dreamies) chicken to cook for them and some beef mince to offer raw (not offering raw chicken due to avian flu as cats may be susceptible but will try some red meat). Have been assured that they eat everything, just as it's Sunday I need to lay in some supplies today and offer a bit of everything then I think just leave them to it in the bedroom with lots of bowls of different food and treats today.

They've had a very traumatic 24 hours what with the long journey and a new home but I'm sure they'll settle in after a few days and having two together definitely helps. I assume you're putting the food somewhere where they can get to it without breaking cover?

When I was doing rescue work I would sometimes have feral kittens in the spare bedroom and I'd have to push their food, and even their litter tray right under the bed as they'd be too scared to come out. At least your two would have been handled from an early age and wouldn't have any fear of humans so it's probably more a case of new home-itis.

I can't wait to see some pictures of them!

Thank you! Yes they are both well socialised but I think maybe aren't that used to seeing a lot of new people, they were both very cuddly with J and Anakin sat on our laps when we were at his home, and Atlantis came to sniff us and say hello, so they just need to get used to me and N and their new territory.
Some of the piles of treats have been eaten, so at least one of them has had something to eat.

There is a plate of wet food under the bed, one under the curtains and I just put a bowl of dry and another pile of treats under the curtains.
There are cardboard boxes and blankets under the bed too.
They are moving back and forth between under the bed and behind the curtains while we are out of the room.

Atlantis let me stroke his face just now when I was putting down some food and treats, but then backed away from me so I let him be, he's become very vocal and is whining, I am sure he must be missing his mum and the other girls and J too and in a strange place at that.

They are more nervous than I am used to from previous kittens but I think it's probably because they are older kittens, ones (that are not feral and are used to being around people of course) a couple of months younger do tend to be a bit fearless and settle in quickly.

We are chatting to them and to one another when we are in the bedroom so that they get used to our voices and of course sleeping in the bed, it is usually good for cats to see humans asleep because it is a massive signal that it is a safe place and that no-one has anything to fear.

Am giving big possible vibes x please nibble on something
Thanks, I am sure it will be OK, first day in a new home, they'll eat something at some point I am telling myself that.
A couple of little piles of treats have disappeared so something has been consumed.
I'd forgotten how nerve-wracking having new cats can be
We are trying to leave them to their own devices as much as possible.

They are unbelievably cute, they were under the bed cuddled up together when I went in there to bring them chicken, 2 little pointy faces staring at me wide-eyed when I looked under the bed to check where best to put the plate of chicken for ease of access.

Please please eat it, come on boys! Once I know they've got some food in them I'll be a lot happier. They can live under the bed for as long as they want, but they can't go without food.

Have you tried tinned tuna or pilchards? I often find that works if I get a cat in the cattery that doesn't want to eat after day one.

They scoffed about a pouch of kitten food and a handful of dry between them in the last few hours.
They seemed to wait until we were in the bedroom and asleep then went for it. That to me points to them feeling more secure while we are in there, which is a good sign.

When I got up just now I could see a bulge behind the curtain so I peeked around the curtain to say hello, 2 little faces peering up at me. Atlantis looked interested so I held my hand out and he sniffed it and let me stroke his face, he didn't move away.
Anakin also looked interested but I'd have had to reach over Atlantis to stroke him and didn't want to push it.

I promised J I would be patient with her 2 shy boys (none of their siblings were shy, they were just each the nervous one from each litter which is why their arranged homes fell through) and I will, I knew they were a bit more shy than average Siams from an ethical breeder when I agreed to take them so that bit is not a problem, as long as they are getting some food in their bellies I can relax and enjoy getting to know them :)

They are so sweet!

Oh we were also woken up at one point by the sound of them thundering around playing tag (or lion and wildebeest) so they are relaxing enough to be playful with one another.
Having shy ones is a new thing for me, but I wouldn't want every cat to be the same :)

They arrived with some preferred toys, but when I was in Pets@Home yesterday picking up food and treats, I couldn't resist picking up this doughnut toy, I told them it was from N the Doughnut Man. :D
(For context, he works in a doughnut factory and often brings boxes of doughnuts to London Urbanite meetups when he comes along!)

Releived that they have had some grub. Am sure am not the only one on here that was feeling your tension at them not eating.

Aye my anxiety level about it was rising throughout the day yesterday and am sure was palpable from my posts here, cats actually can't go long without food before becoming really quite unwell and potential liver damage, so kittens that also need additional calories for growth not eating in a new home, although that is somewhat normal behaviour, is always going to be worrying if it's gone on all day!

Any anxiety I had completely dissipated when I heard eating noises from under the bed in the small hours, I haven't seen them eat but I am fairly confident that if one of them has eaten, both have had at least something.
I took them more food a bit ago, hopefully they eat that too, they're still a bit behind what they should be eating per day, but if they're getting something in them then I'm sure it will be fine.

It was when I gave them a plate of warm chicken yesterday and they just looked at me and moved away from the plate that I was having my worst "oh fuck, what do I do now?" moment. They did eat it it later!
I still have tinned tuna and minced beef to deploy too, as well as 4 types of commercial wet kitten food, a bag of RC kitten dry, 4 types of treats, and some more chicken mini fillets to cook up.

I don't want to get them hooked on treats though as I don't usually give a lot of treats, they're reserved for when I need cats to be distracted or rewarded rather than an everyday thing. So just while they are settling in, then I'll dial that back once I am sure they are eating better food well.

When Carrie was new I got a Feliway diffuser and I'm sure it helped, along with all of the behavioural stuff.
I did look at those in Pets@Home on Friday and they had several different types that claimed to be for different situations and there were different dispersal methods - urgh, back in the day it was just one type of Feliway Diffuser - I was completely boggled by the choice and ended up not getting one.

I just got the Feliway Optimum starter kit.

Thanks, I'll see if I can pick up one of those!

They weren't using the cardboard boxes I provided, I have a set of nesting side tables though and used 2 of those to make some hidey holes with a blanket over the top covering 3 sides and a pillow and blanket inside and they really like those.

They are also getting a little bolder. When Anakin let me stroke his face last, Atlantis was behind him and raising his head up to me as if to say "do me too!" which was so sweet :)
We are making contact and they're gradually getting braver and more willing to interact with us.

I love that you are basically building forts for them :D

Cats need forts.

N is trying to get nocturnal as he's back on nights tomorrow, there's not a lot of light in the bedroom with the curtains closed and his phone camera is shit, but he just sent me this:

(Yes N has given his blanket - his employer doesn't give bonuses, they give cheap crap insulting gifts to employees instead and a blanket was this years "Christmas Bonus" - to the kittens).
