Your daily cat and kitten news

Who remembers the stuff we use to use before spot on flea treatments became available?

I can remember using pyrethrum power which didn't so much kill the fleas as anaesthetise them and you'd have to bash them as they dropped off before they started to come round again. Then came Nuvan Top which was like nerve gas in an aerosol and got withdrawn from sale after a while as it was considered dangerous and finally Frontline in a spray bottle before they started putting it in pipettes.

Some people still put flea collars on their cats but I've never been keen on those.
Ah yes. I have a mate who still bears the scars on his back from when he offered to help deflea a previous cat. That towel wasn't tied quite tight enough! 😮

Thank you so much!

I am aware that I have spent several pages basically going Look At My Cats :D
I hope no-one minds and is enjoying the updates and pics.

Loads of love to you and Ms st8 and your nearest and dearest, both human and animal - I hope you all have a brilliant 2025 :)

Ha, if you can't go look at my cats! on this thread, then we are fucked :D

Backatya for you and N and the boys!

That's what this thread is for, don't worry about that! The new babies are adorable. Perfect way to start the new year.

Backatyah Epona & N and Ani & Atty ... I'm another one that's been enjoying the updates.

And everyone else on this thread and their SOs, inc the Kitties ...

Beauty had the zoomies yesterday - even with three legs she can get up a significant rate of knots.
And [[[[fanfare]]]] she's settled down on three out of four laps for cuddles, strokes / purrs in recent days ... and yesterday she went to sleep on me, after a short wash !!!
She didn't seem too bothered by the NYE fireworks on the telly - was too wet n windy for any locally, at least we couldn't hear any. She and Bella were somewhat confuzticated that all we four were still up at midnight.

It's no different to someone having a new baby or grandchild.... only kittens are a lot more interesting.

That's lovely to hear. She's come such a long way with you and it's great things are going well with both her and Bella.

at the risk of stating the obvious, squawking like a cat in pain can make the point better than saying 'no'

i don't think i've ever got in to trouble with a kitty who was seeking tummy rubs

I've always hissed (with cats that are comfortable and established in their territory), mostly they understand that.

Mostly when cats roll on their backs they want their head and face rubbed rather than their tummy, Jakey was fine with tummy rubs and actually a little ridiculous when it came to demanding them
I'm being a bit careful with our new boys as not sure what they like yet and they have only been seeking attention for 12 hours, so am not going to push anything.

Carrie has what I think is a tick on her ear. Cats Protection is saying to use a tick tool, which I suspect she'd tolerate better than tweezers.

Surprisingly PaH is actually open till 4 but I don't really fancy going down there on a motorbike in the pouring rain on 4 hours sleep. Any other ideas?

I know with humans you can remove them using tweezers - but not the flat ended type, the pointy ones. There is technique involved to avoid leaving any tick inside, but I'm sure you can Google. Might be easier to get those if you don't already have some than a tick tool.

Tons of videos!

I'm interested in arachnids generally, but I have to say that ticks give me the heebie jeebies.
I have no advice, but good luck dealing with it.

Have you got any spot on flea treatments in the house? If you have, just put a drop of it directly on to the tick which should kill it. Once it's dead, you should be able to remove it with tweezers, making sure you get the legs out at the same time.

It's not going to keep him out of the kitchen, but it will remind him that he has "transgressed". I need to make space for the food boxes in a cupboard he can't get into. I'm going to need to be in better physical shape to do that.

Cut a piece of plastic from the lid of an aerosol, and cut a narrow V into it.
I've done this before and it worked.
Or if you have or know somebody nearby with a 3D printer, I'll send you a file to print one.

Woke up after a nap today pinned to the bed by 2 kittens.
Ani really is huge, he's the same size at 7.5 months that Sonic was fully grown, plus he's a bit chubby.
(I don't really worry about kittens being chubby, they still have 1 or 2 growth spurts to go so it's not an issue and it would have to be quite an extreme situation therefore to put a kitten on a restricted diet).

Then I got them some food and they scoffed it, then they played for quite a while - Atty really loves his toy doughnut.
Then they came back onto the bed for more cuddles.

Atty is reminding me a bit of Sonic in terms of personality, he's quite serious and intense.

So after:
  1. Calling the insurance vet helpline to have them confirm it was a tick and a tool is the best thing
  2. Going to PaH in the pouring rain on the bike to discover it was very sensibly closed, contrary to website appearances
  3. Appealing on a local page for someone to lend me a tool, unsuccessfully
  4. Making a few homemade ones from bits of plastic, none of which worked
  5. Consulting my sister, who said "just pull them off, our cats get them all the time",
I finally just yanked it out with the pointed tweezers I already had. Cat was surprisingly chill about my hamfisted attempts.

The tick, for educational purposes.
