Your daily cat and kitten news

Idiot creatures managed to get hold of a used hot hands sachet, I heard them playing earlier but just kind of ignored the noise, woke up about half an hour ago and found they'd managed to get hold of one and split it open and the innards of it were all over the floor (mostly iron filings), I don't even know where they found it, we've not even used them for years so it must have been under the wardrobe or something, bloody kittens honestly.

Waiting for the vet to call me

I'm honestly not sure whether I should be panicking or not, I feel a bit sick.
Probably fine.

Abstract

Introduction. The use of hand warmers in Hong Kong during cold weather has become increasingly popular. Iron powder is one of the ingredients. We report the first cases of ingestion of hand warmer contents. Care reports. Four elderly patients ingested the contents of hand warmers. All had no or mild symptoms, one had radiopaque particles in the stomach, two showed transiently increased serum iron concentrations (within the reference range), and all recovered with only supportive care. Discussion. These hand warmers contain a mixture of iron powder, activated charcoal, vermiculite, sodium chloride, and water. Iron powder accounts for about 50% of the weight (range 95–120 g). There are no reports of elemental iron or iron oxides ingestion causing iron toxicity and no published data on the absorption, elimination, adverse effects, or toxicities in humans after unintentional ingestion of hand warmer contents. A single oral dose toxicity test of hand warmer contents (2 g/kg) resulted in no toxicity or deaths in ten rats. Ingestions of one hand warmer packet or less can be treated with observation and supportive care as needed. Conclusions. Although this case series is small, the lack of toxicity is consistent with animal studies. It appears unlikely that significant toxicity will occur after the ingestion of one hand warmer packet. The ingestion of larger amounts might lead to iron-related toxicity and may justify more aggressive management. Proper labeling by local distributors may prevent further unintentional ingestions of these non-food products.

Thank you, that is sort of what I thought, all the ingredients seem fairly innocuous and I don't think they were deliberately eating it or anything, just batting it about (you know what kittens are like) and it split, most of the contents seemed to be over the carpet, so it seems like the only way they might have ingested any is by licking their paws afterwards, and only a small amount.

A vet has called me back and she's not too concerned about it, she agrees that they'd probably have to eat a lot of those ingredients for it to be toxic and they'd likely be drooling and/or vomiting if they'd done that.

Thank you so much for finding that information, I was having a bit of a panic and you finding that for me and posting it has helped no end, I gave the vet the info also - thank you so much, deeply appreciate it.

They're such troublemakers at times, aren't they! It's like having kids.

They've started to pull bits of wallpaper off now, I have some more toys that they haven't seen yet, it might be time to deploy them to keep them busy until they find the next thing to destroy.

I keep being astounded at how big Anakin is too, he's an absolute unit, kitten in a full sized cat's body.

ye gods, that Beauty of ours can't half shift when she wants to !
that's the second time she's gone haring past me in less than ten minutes.
having a mad half hour it would seem, I was about to post when she went past again.
Yeah, Lillith's in a playful mood today too. I was worried about her when I got back from holiday last week because she seemed really listless and withdrawn, (although her appetite was still fine) but she'd perked up again within 24 hours, so obviously she was just in a mood with me for going away! 🤣

My four were all chasing eachother around upstairs earlier which they don't normally do. The poor dog didn't know what to do about it as he likes to keep some sort of semblance of order in the house but this was beyond his control.

I am currently finding myself absolutely bewildered by kitten food, a lot of it is all different brands than it was last time I ordered some!

They're eating me out of house and home, I don't know where they are putting it all.

When our Buttons had kittens (25 years ago) we had no idea what to feed them once they were close to being weaned, so we asked my mate whose dog had a litter of puppies. He said he fed the pups with weetabix and milk so that’s what they got. All lived to be hale and hearty 😼

I think there would probably be a full scale uprising if I offered them weetabix, they are very keen on raw meat, I'm starting to wonder whether to at least do part raw feeding.

Mind you I saw an ad on telly today for a raw food company (both cat and dog food) and I couldn't find even the most basic nutritional info on their website, had to go onto their online chat service to get it.
That didn't fill me with confidence tbh, I expect that info to be easily available on the website of a company selling pet food.

And I'm not sure I'm up to making my own with added supplements, stuff that comes out of pouches is easier (and a lot of it is fairly decent food).

There is some very complex cat politics going on.

I'd barely seen another cat in the garden before last week and suddenly 4 have started visiting. A black and white one, which I think lives behind and chased Carrie around a bit, a black one and a ginger one I'd never seen before and this morning ginge came back with a tabby mate to stare at her through the window.

Carrie is :hmm: rather than  so far. It's not full on warfare unlike with the fox.

I have also been finding current cat food baffling with all the options claiming to be healthy. I assume it's deliberate obfuscation.
