Your daily cat and kitten news

I put my bag on the floor when I came in yesterday and couldn't work out what Carrie was finding so interesting about it... Until I went into the living room later and discovered her savaging a knitted catnip mouse. I'd forgotten there were two in there a friend had given me. Carrie had located and extracted it immediately.

Ok, tips for getting fucking Felpreva on a deeply suspicious cat who runs away at the speed of light whenever he even thinks it's in my hand?

Am I going to have to wrestle him? Would rather not.
I give them a treat to lull them in and have the felpreva in my pocket. I then hold them between my legs, kind of like sitting on them and hold their chest with my hand so they’re totally secure, then apply the juice.

Aye well Orientals and Siamese are both really the same breed but wearing different colour coats :)
And yes they have ridiculous ears and little long pointy faces :)

I find them utterly adorable ❤️
Me too.

Speaking of ridiculous ears... this was Mia when she was a kitten. She was 11 weeks at this point and still with her Mum and siblings.

... and 14 weeks, after she came to live with us

Some progress this evening!
They are eating well now, scoffing down everything I offer them, even "in jelly" food

They had an evening play session out in the open while we were awake and watching, Atlantis running around with his doughnut toy in his mouth, much to N's delight.
I offered my hand out to Atty and he came over and had a good sniff, then meerkatted to have a good look at the top of the bed - I invited him up and asked if he wanted cuddles, he wasn't quite ready for that yet but I think we're nearly there.
Ani is a little behind him in terms of braveness, I think because he has been back and forth and this is a rehome situation for him. He was still happy to play while we were watching but slunk off quietly if we spoke to him.

Have some kitten tax (excuse the state of our bedroom, decorating and carpets never seem to quite make it onto the high priority list, I pulled off any loose or lifting bits of wallpaper before the kittens arrived so it looks a right state, but is at least safe):

Atty is the blue tabby point on the right, Ani the chocolate point on the left.

See, they've got shorter nicknames already :D
They really are rather fabulous felines.
I think Atty looks more Atticus than Atlantis!
What lucky boys whose stars aligned to land softly with you.

Eep, that sounds kinda risky. Scratched thighs! Thanks though, will bear it in mind.

I’m debating getting a cat but it would have to be an inside only cat because I live in a flats and I’m worried that any rescue indoor cat would have an expensive medical condition. Plus I’d have to get someone to feed it when I go away.

This is why I've typically ended up with posh cats, typically their breeders want them to go to indoor only homes, and in these days of DNA testing there's no reason why a pedigree cat would have any more health issues than a domestic (most breeds, there are still some that have issues eg. Persian due to facial structure). There's an upfront cost though (not cheap), and insurance is more expensive.

Another option if you wanted an older but not elderly cat would be to look for a retired breeding cat, females from ethical breeders are typically retired after 2-3 litters, so around 3-4 years old, males can be retired at any age but are typically young.

For both of the above options, research breeders to make sure you are buying from an ethical breeder and not a kitten farm.

Ask your local vet - they often help rehome strays and accidental kittens, they'll know of clients who have had litters and are looking for homes - going this route is keeping those cats out of shelters in the first place. Vets and private homes looking for homes for Domestics are typically not too concerned whether the cat will be indoor or outdoor, but if going for indoor only it is best to get a kitten that hasn't got used to life outdoors, or an older one that is used to indoor only.

If you weren't averse to taking on an older cat with a health condition but cost being a factor, a lot of charity shelters that rehome cats will help with ongoing costs for cats with an existing condition - FIV+ cats for example need medication but much like HIV in humans it is now a manageable condition which doesn't necessarily mean ill health or shortened life-expectancy, they need to be indoor only though and either by themselves or with other FIV+ cats, and I've seen shelter ads for FIV+ kitties that explicitly say they will pay for the ongoing costs of that condition.

Just a few things to consider! Getting someone to feed and give your cat attention while you are away is usually pretty easy, if you don't know anyone there are agencies where you can pay to have someone come round and feed/spend time with/give medications while you are away.

Jocky successfully Felprevaed! I donned a thick glove, treats on the kitchen table, firmly grabbed the skin on the back of his neck and held him down, uncapped the bloody stuff and did it. He yowled to buggery but it's done thank fuck!

Congrats!
Sonic used to hate flea spot on drops - I didn't do them regularly because being indoor only there was little exposure to risk of fleas, we did have 2 infestations during their lives and obviously I treated them then and for a while after each one to make sure it was all completely dealt with.

He used to react like it was burning him, made me wonder if they find it irritates the skin or summat.

I recall reading the info leaflet which gave instructions that if you got any of the liquid in your mouth, to rinse thoroughly immediately, and I scoffed at that thinking "who would be stupid enough to get it in their mouth?"
I put it on Sonic's neck and he immediately shook like a dog, and yes I got some in my mouth and spent the next few minutes washing it out :D

I keep being a bit taken aback by how fucking stunning they are tbh.

I think they might be a little too timid to take to a show, we'll see how they settle in and maybe get them a bit more used to having visitors, but they both have the looks for it.
