Your daily cat and kitten news

Seemed like it was going well this morning, couple of big wees near the litter tray.
This afternoon it's all gone a bit south, he was back and forth to the litter tray and now has given up and is just sitting on me weeing on my lap so we're both sitting covered in his wee (I really don't care about being weed on per se but him being in this state is heartbreaking). He's also been passing some bloody mucus.
Phoned the vet again and have an appointment tomorrow afternoon, am still trying to get a urine sample, it's difficult because he's just doing little wees everywhere.
:(
Oh mate so sorry to hear this. You are doing the absolute best you can for him. If he's weeing while on you could he sit on a carrier bag or similar to catch wee? Not ideal but might help.

It absolutely is heartbreaking so you have all my sympathy and hugs. Both of you x

I managed to collect a couple of drops just now and he's basically pissing blood :(
He's due for another dose of gabapentin in a couple of hours, even with pain relief it must be agony the poor sod.

Sorry to hear he's not doing so well. I hope a visit to the vet can sort him out.

Sorry to hear this. It must be really anxiety provoking.

Arnold went on a bit of a rampage last night, running around, stopping suddenly, looking like he was going to pounce, then - whizz, off again! I think it's the change in weather.

Today he's calmer. As usual he likes being on or in a cardboard box. This one contains both cat and (remnants of) catnip, as well as his favourite toy. He's asleep now!

Sorry Epona. I hope the pain killers start working soon.

I mean nothing happened but it was all OK (at least no developments).
I put Jakey in the carrier early as I figured he would be less likely to wee in a small enclosed space and stood a better chance of turning up with some urine in his bladder.
We got there, I warned the vet that he had been circling and was probably going to wee at the first opportunity, vet got a kidney bowl, Jakey didn't wee, vet went good some urine in there let's take him out back and get a sample.
Got the nurse to hold Jakey, got the needle, was feeling round for his bladder, kidney bowl forgotten, Jakey weed all down the vet and none was collected.

I wasn't charged for the appointment as it was a complete fail - and I've got some litter pearl things to use in case he goes in the litter tray and a she-we (fe-we?) type thing to try to collect a urine sample before Monday.

Awww, bless his little cotton socks. Hopefully by Monday he'll have adjusted to the meds and increased his flow, and the next appointment will bring you a more conclusive answer. They sound like a really nice vet too.

It was a locum rather that our usual vet (who doesn't tend to work Saturdays) - quite a young bloke so might have a trick or two to learn about cats and their pissing :D
I feel like our regular vet would have had someone hold the kidney bowl under his rear end just in case :D

Really sorry to read about jakey Epona, keeping everything crossed for you both (and yeah, really, why not keep the bowl there?!)

((((Jake and Epona)))) Why won't they just prescribe antibiotics Epona? Sorry if I've missed it.
Because it's more likely to be crystals than a bacterial infection, and antibiotics will be problematic due to his kidney disease - so they don't prescribe them without first knowing that they are absolutely going to help (hence trying to get a sample for urinalysis/culture).

Oh sorry, you did say. Ugh poor you, sounds so stressful :(

No it's OK I don't mind explaining! It's a bit more complicated because of his kidney situation.
He's already on gabapentin for the pain - pain relief of some sort is part of the treatment protocol for any cause of UTI in cats and gabapentin is our best option - although it is cleared by the kidneys and we had to reduce his dose under veterinary instruction due to it not being cleared out of his system well.
I think for crystals, that is the primary treatment, and a low stress environment, until it passes - often the cause of why this happens to cats is unknown,/idiopathic, but the fact he has kidney disease and is on medication for that makes both crystals and bacterial cause of UTIs more likely.
They can also give muscle relaxers which can help them to pass crystals.
All these drugs are bad for the kidneys though, so especially in cats who are already kidney patients they tend to see if the initial pain relief (which would be used anyway) helps them to get over it, which it often does - but then wait for urinalysis results to see what other drugs might help.

Our Buttons had a terrible time peeing (our fault for feeding him human grade tuna) and the injection the vet gave her to dissolve the crystals was amazing. Thinking of you and Jakey and everything crossed for a good result.

Thanks for explaining. I really hope it works - or at least that they manage to get some pee from him :/ x
