I've had a cat before and was telling me OH this cats behaviour isn't like anything I've had before, My OH reckons she was mistreated at some point and is very wary and nervous.
Yeah, Lilith's quite sensitive in the way you describe, Polly. Her previous human kept her largely in the bedroom for the first 15 months of her life with occasional trips downstairs until he moved out and I took his room. I think that made her quite shy, although her confidence has definitely improved in the two and a half years I've had her and she learnt to use the cat flap and gets to socialise with my housemates and other cats outside. But she still jumps at any sudden movement as if she thinks I'm going to be mad at her (I never could be!). That's probably why she still acts crazy and kitten like, because she never got to be a proper kitten when she was small.I once wooed a very scared semi feral cat Gramsci and it was extremely slow going. I think it took over a year of being hissed at every day. It's weird that you made progress and now she's scared again but she's obviously on very high alert and it could be anything that has spooked her.
One of my cats now is very nervous and despite our having had him since he was a tiny kitten - so I know nothing terrible has happened to him - he will still be wary of me for weeks after flea treatment or if I mildly tell him off for any reason. So you could be up against disposition plus trauma. I would just keep going and obviously take the good advice up there too ^^^ It's just trust building and you have to go at her pace.
Awww, thank you! I feel equally lucky to have Lilith. She's lucky to have you LeytonCatLady - I remember you taking her on
That sounds the most likely.
And possibly something unpleasant has happened since last time kitty was visiting.
i take it you've not got anywhere with finding out if she has someone who thinks they are her owner?
Some cats are more nervous around men than women for various reasons - possibly due to behaviour of one or more men they have met in the past, possibly (at least used to be the case) vets are more likely to be men.
Probably stating the obvious, but i'd try sitting or even lying on the floor, far away enough for it not to seem like a threat, and let kitty approach you. And / or create a few safe hiding spaces in your home if you want to encourage her to stay.
I'm not entirely convinced by the coat colour / personality type thing when it comes to cats, but i've certainly known some calico kitties who have been quite nervous, possibly more than other colours of cat, but not a scientifically sound sample size.
The weather is good and think she likes being outside with knowing she can get food and water somewhere.
I don't want to speak too soon, but I feel like Jakey might be improving a bit.
unfortunately, that's as good as you're going to get with some feral kitties. some will (eventually) convert to the indoor life, but some won't.
