Your daily cat and kitten news

Any advice on this. The part time cat I posted about earlier on thread has now become very nervous again.

My OH who she appeared to bond to told me she ran out when my OH dropped a bag. So nervous of anything.

She has been appearing and sitting on my courtyard wall. Went out to give her some food out for her and she ran off. Normally she sits and is happy for me to give her food.

Today she's turned up and eaten the food and disappeared. My OH was in and said this time the cat did not come and look for her. OH only new as food bowl was empty. Which was unusual.

Got back late tonight. Saw the cat on the wall looking at me. Showed her the Dreamies bag but unusually she didn't come.

I went to toilet and she was in flat eating from bowl then got very nervous when she saw me and ran to door. Showed her some Dreamies and she hesitated then went out the cat flap.

I reckoned she saw me go away from window , came in , as I was in toilet and then felt safe to come in and eat.

I've spent a lot of time getting her confidence. So do not understand what has happened now.

She is coming in to eat. We were both out on Friday and food was gone when I came back. Id put food out in morning in case she came.

She is around but gone back partly to be very very wary.

Don't understand why. After all these months when she became quite happy to come around when she felt like it and stay. After all the time I took to get her trust.

I've grown quite attached to her. So its a bit upsetting.

I've had a cat before and was telling me OH this cats behaviour isn't like anything I've had before, My OH reckons she was mistreated at some point and is very wary and nervous.

Last week I moved a lot of stuff around in flat to do something. Cat turned up and stood and stared at room like being freaked out with the change.

That sounds the most likely.

And possibly something unpleasant has happened since last time kitty was visiting.

i take it you've not got anywhere with finding out if she has someone who thinks they are her owner?

:(

Some cats are more nervous around men than women for various reasons - possibly due to behaviour of one or more men they have met in the past, possibly (at least used to be the case) vets are more likely to be men.

Probably stating the obvious, but i'd try sitting or even lying on the floor, far away enough for it not to seem like a threat, and let kitty approach you. And / or create a few safe hiding spaces in your home if you want to encourage her to stay.

I'm not entirely convinced by the coat colour / personality type thing when it comes to cats, but i've certainly known some calico kitties who have been quite nervous, possibly more than other colours of cat, but not a scientifically sound sample size.

I once wooed a very scared semi feral cat Gramsci and it was extremely slow going. I think it took over a year of being hissed at every day. It's weird that you made progress and now she's scared again but she's obviously on very high alert and it could be anything that has spooked her.

One of my cats now is very nervous and despite our having had him since he was a tiny kitten - so I know nothing terrible has happened to him - he will still be wary of me for weeks after flea treatment or if I mildly tell him off for any reason. So you could be up against disposition plus trauma. I would just keep going and obviously take the good advice up there too ^^^ It's just trust building and you have to go at her pace.

Yeah, Lilith's quite sensitive in the way you describe, Polly. Her previous human kept her largely in the bedroom for the first 15 months of her life with occasional trips downstairs until he moved out and I took his room. I think that made her quite shy, although her confidence has definitely improved in the two and a half years I've had her and she learnt to use the cat flap and gets to socialise with my housemates and other cats outside. But she still jumps at any sudden movement as if she thinks I'm going to be mad at her (I never could be!). That's probably why she still acts crazy and kitten like, because she never got to be a proper kitten when she was small.

I've watched her when she jumps off wall and leaves. She goes through empty arch which looks to me comes out behind some other arches which are used. Also saw her sitting outside one arch in alleyway. But no luck yet in tracking down an owner. I do not think she has a particular one. But goes around various places. Is what I'm guessing.

After I wrote the post last night she turned up very late. So I sat quietly whilst she ate. She wasn't expecting me there and almost ran off . Left her to eat the food and she came over and gave me one head bump on hand and went off. So that's progress.

OH said she came in last night as bedroom door had been pushed open. And she was sitting on wall looking in this morning early.

So your right about not appearing a threat in any way. Then she calms down a bit. OH did say at moment she does not like to much petting. Prefers to be left alone to do her own thing.

The weather is good and think she likes being outside with knowing she can get food and water somewhere.

Cally, the pregnant feral cat who has been sleeping inside for the last couple of months, has disappeared.
I've not seen her for 2 or 3 days. Not even to come in and eat.
I think she's had her kittens. Probably under the spare combine harvester where she had Tiggy and Harry.

I don't want to speak too soon, but I feel like Jakey might be improving a bit.
He seems to be weeing 3 or 4 times a day instead of 3 or 4 times an hour.
Still going on the floor, but I don't know how much of that is a) he's weed on the floor a lot the last few days so it seems like the right place to go and b) off his tits on gabapentin makes it difficult to get in and out of the litter tray.
But things feel a little - calmer - today.

unfortunately, that's as good as you're going to get with some feral kitties. some will (eventually) convert to the indoor life, but some won't.

:(

Well I was out working today. My OH said she came and stayed.

Just arrived late and she came in and came straight up to me for attention and food.

And did her tour of flat to check everything. So it's back to normal.

Semi feral cats. What can I say. A learning experience.
