WTF is going on in Iran?

Lots of stuff seems to be going boom.

Drone attacks.

Drones have been used to attack a military plant in Iran, with Iranian news agencies reporting a loud blast and showing a flash of light at what was said to be an ammunition factory.

Emergency vehicles and fire trucks were shown at the plant in central Isfahan province. It comes amid tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme, as well as the supply of Shahed drones to Russia that have been used in the war against Ukraine.

Some reports said several facilities were hit around Iran within a period of a few hours. The Guardian was unable to confirm those reports, but Iran’s IRNA news agency reported a fire at an oil refinery in the northern city of Tabriz, saying one person was injured. It did not say what caused the fire or if it was related to the incident in Isfahan.

There have been a number of explosions and fires around Iranian military, nuclear and industrial facilities in the past few years.

In July, Iran said it had arrested a sabotage team made up of Kurdish militants working for Israel who planned to blow up a “sensitive” defence industry centre in Isfahan.

Israel has long threatened military action against Iran if indirect talks between Washington and Tehran fail to salvage a 2015 nuclear pact. Israel says Iran is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran denies this.

That cunt Netanyahoo innit. Nothing but war.

Not particularly arsed about what he’s been smashing this time though.

fwiw the arms factory attacked in the initial reports isn’t the one producing drones for Russia, although that is in the same city.

This is going to push the population back into rallying for the flag again isn’t it, and away from the nascent protest movement, like when the US marched into neighbouring Iraq? Or at least give the state a good stick to beat the ‘fifth columnists’ with.

I briefly wondered if it was retaliation for the recent charges filed against three people for an attempted assassination of a journalist on US soil:

NEW YORK, Jan 27 (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors have charged three men with attempting to assassinate a prominent critic of Iran's government who was previously the target of a failed Tehran-backed kidnapping plot, Attorney General Merrick Garland said on Friday,

Rafat Amirov, Polad Omarov and Khalid Mehdiyev were charged with murder-for-hire and money laundering for their role in the thwarted Tehran-backed assassination attempt of the journalist and activist, who is a U.S. citizen and lives in Brooklyn.

The way Garland laid it out in the press conference, he seemed pretty certain of tracing it back to the Iranian government.

They’d been bigging up this gathering for a while, which made me suspect someone might have a go. A competent state actor would have probably hit the ceremony and all the bigwigs gathered there, this attack happened some distance away on the edge of the cordon, so a much less capable organisation likely to blame, I guess some kind of sectarian attack is the most likely.
