Women's World Cup 2019

Italy V. China and Holland V. Japan later then.
Italy China should be interesting. What I have seen of China, they are a hard team and not very good on social skills. Don't think I have seen Italy play yet
but could imagine their temperament/style might clash with China.
Wont be seeing either as will be at work :(
Out Thursday and Friday night's for the two biggies as well :(

The football has been more open, less cynical as well. You don't get players rolling around on the pitch in agony, claiming a free kick on the half way line when someone comes near them, unlike the men.

This was the late foul seconds from the end. The foul was appalling and the display that followed even worse. Each of those two events justified a red card, yet the referee overruled VAR to avoid Cameroon walking off the pitch;
seconds from the end, really?
The referee of England’s last-16 victory twice overruled VAR late on to prevent Cameroon players from abandoning the match, The Telegraph can reveal.

Qin Liang was concerned Cameroon would walk off the pitch when she rejected advice on a Fran Kirby penalty claim and refused to dismiss Alexandra Takounda for a scraped challenge on Steph Houghton.

With respect, that's not quite true. I've seen a few dramatic 'injuries' during the tournament; one that springs to mind is when Rapinoe brushed one of the Spanish players in the face yesterday and she went down like it was a right hook.

Have also seen other cynical play, too. It may not be as prevalent as in the men's game, but it is there.

I was just coming to post that. You can kind of understand her doing that, but admitting it is a different thing (fifa supporting her too). She should have just got a grip earlier in the game.

Isha Johansen, chair of the women’s football committee for the African Football Confederation (CAF), also president of the Sierra Leone FA, earlier said in a statement: “Whilst remaining proud of our African teams that participated in the World Cup, the match between England and Cameroon reflected badly, not only on African women’s football but African football on the whole. It is an issue which will be addressed and dealt with at the appropriate levels of governance."
Is that fair? I get some are interpreting it as "representative of African football", but shouldn't their Confederation be trying to point out that, no, this is just one group of players?

It was good game management, and I think the right calls were made in the circumstances (not that particularly like it). The late foul was a red, but it was too late to make a difference. Their captain should have had a second yellow for the dissent around that incident too. We were 3-0 up, so the pen wouldn't have changed the result.

The elbow in the face incident early on was a red too though, imho. Guess Cameroon got away with that as it was so early in the game. That is a lot less excusable.

France haven't been brilliant tonight, reckon the USA would beat 'em

I'm not convinced, think US were a little lucky to get past a young Spanish team who played very well. That penalty could easily not have been given.

I *think* I'm right in saying no one has beaten US in last three years apart from France. They're a good side, it's not just home support spurring them on.

It's a case of you can only beat what's in front of you, I think. Brazil doubled up (sometimes tripled up) on France's wide players to spoil their attacks and relied on a bit of brilliance from their couple of star players or a French mistake to let them in. That made France look perhaps a bit less than impressive, but they still won. Against the USA, they may find themselves under much more pressure but also find there is more space for their creative players to run into.
