Women's World Cup 2019

And another one... Unless they reckon it was handball, there was nothing wrong with the France goal.

Are the protocols for VAR different from the men's WC? They seem rather more interventionist here.

Will this tournament have an impact on the future of VARS?
I hope so. Get rid of it for me to be honest it fucks up with the flow of the game completely. It usually evened itself out before but more importantly it added to the atmosphere when there was scope for human error from the officials. Now it's all stop and start and as a spectator at a ground where there's no screen (Anfield) it's fucking awful waiting for the game to get underway again knowing that play could be stopped because of something that looked a lot different in time lapse TV mode.

Many have been calling for VAR for years, partly because there is so much at stake now and it reduces human error. It's use in the women's world cup is a bit clumsy.

It just shows how much decision-making is interpretation. And sometimes slowing things down doesn't help - as the VAR people are trained to know, slo-mo makes everything look more deliberate.

This directive that play must continue until the ball goes dead is leading to farcical scenes where players don't celebrate or celebrate twice .
I thought VAR was to be used for "did that cross the line or not?" and as an assistant ref, not a replacement.
Yep. Whole stadium knew that last one was off-side. It certainly removes that moment of euphoria. I don't mind so much as long as they get it right. In cricket we've lost the magic moment of the finger going up, but it's worth it on balance imo. But cricket's a series of set pieces so it works. Even adds to the drama when it's all shown on the big screen. I'm still undecided in football, but I don't like what I've seen in this WWC.

Yes, same with tennis. They've made Hawkeye into an event. I wonder if they're going to insist on VAR they could introduce a similar challenge system? Although that would be used for gamesmanship, and also all this nonsense seems to be moving too far too fast.

Tennis again a series of set pieces so it works. It's also quick and decisive - in/out, no interpretation. I think that's the problem with football - they're not just using it to judge things like offside, but extending it to fouls. I dunno. I also hate it when things like Maradona/Henry happen.

Brazil have good skills but I think France are the better team. That said, Brazil have come right back into this.

This commentator accusing the French player of pretending to have cramp. Tell you what pal, go run around for two hours and get back to me on how your legs are doing.

Yep, still a scare. Great block at one end followed by a defensive lapse really for the winner.

Like their men's team, they look to me like they probably quite like counter-attacking more than making the pace. Deani (sp?) is brilliant in that regard - pace, skill, strength. Like her a lot.

No men should be involved with the women's world cup. Do we get women involved with men's matches?
You possibly said the same during the 2015 WC? He's been singing the praises of womens football for many years, pretty much alone among the big name commentators, he's the one that took it seriously before others noticed.
