Where are you on the transport network?

Sort of. Ulm isn't London.
Stuttgart is a big city (and international hub).

In each case, there's a high speed line that's part of a long distance route passing through a major city, and part of the high speed line is used for regional services. It's not all that weird. There are also a lot of regional services elsewhere in the UK that operate at relatively high speeds, up to 110mph and so on. It simply makes sense where they are sharing a line with other services so that they don't hold things up.

Hope you get out soon. I was born near there. officially it is No.1 Croydon; who knew.
Oh yeah, no worries...we were out of EC like a dose of salts! We've nailed the coach number now to land us right at the foot of the stairs to the "bridge to nowhere" that, despite its nickname, is super convenient to nip out and across to the Home Office and the 154 stop for the bus home. :)
Just love the transport hub heaven that is Croydon!

Nearing the end of a London-Paris-Munich-Stuttgart work trip. Unfortunately due to strike action my Eurostar is cancelled so I've had to cancel my Paris meetings and fly back to LHR from Stuttgart.

Anyway, after the horrors of Munich Hbf which STILL isn't finished I find they are now rebuilding Stuttgart Hbf.

The rebuilding of Stuttgart station is an immense project, one of the biggest in Europe. All of the tracks move underground, at right angles to the platforms as they are now, and it becomes a through station instead of a terminus.
This is from few days ago, first trains testing the new tracks somewhere just beyond the hole you photographed:

Wow, that looks impressive!
I've been to Stuttgart years ago when my sister was living there.
