Where are you on the transport network?

but then I thought of the Circle Line.

it's not a circle any more (although i believe UKIP made it a manifesto commitment to return it to being a circle)

the glasgow underground / subway is a circle, though, isn't it? (i've never set a paw in glasgow)

as an aside, arising from a photo being posted somewhere and a discussion about it, i found out recently that fairground roundabouts in the USA generally go the opposite way round compared to ones in the UK, presume it's like them driving on the wrong side of the road...

Genuinely amused and curious by your last paragraph. I would love that to be true even though it makes fuck all sense.

I’d never paid any attention to the direction but from films at least, I am sure everyone single carousel I’ve seen turns left to right, I.e. anticlockwise, as you observe it from the outside. I dare anyone to prove me wrong :p

The one in teuchter ‘s photo would appear to be turning clockwise, going by the way the horses are facing.

Had a "Lads Playtime" in Dortmund. The view from my hotel room maybe not exactly a premium view for many, but I'm not complaining.

Easy to get a good ride etc etc.
I'll get me coat. 🤭
Never ridden on an ICE service but whenever I’ve used ordinary regional trains in Germany I was surprised to see their punctuality record was often pretty sketchy.

Having said that, it is still very affordable on the whole, relaxed, and friendly. I absolutely love the fact (unless we were told a lie and for the last few years we’ve been inadvertently fare dodging) that when you are going to the football in Germany, your football ticket is also valid for travel in the local rail network for several hours before kickoff and again after the end of the game.

With the noticeable exception of Munich, yes, a ticket to a big German football game includes travel on the local rail network before and after the game.

Makes a great deal of sense given consumption patterns.

And yepp, it's decades of under investment and flawed / shortsighted decision making that are the cause of Germany's current rail problems.

I rode three different ICE services a couple of days ago. They all ran 1-5 minutes late at some point, though this actually worked in my favour as I had short connecting times. Was amazed to have to sit in the vestibule for an hour on one of them due to lack of spare seats. Obviously felt very familiar.

Seems a lot of European governments with decent train services looked at how fucked the UK had become and thought they'd like a bit of that action; fares going north, service going south. Still, draft beer on the ICE trains. For now.

It's the same cycle everywhere - things are running fairly well and people vote in governments offering spending cuts. The effects on things like railways aren't immediate because you can get away with letting a maintenance backlog build up for a little while. Then things start to deteriorate, people start complaining, and money eventually appears. Things improve, and we start at the beginning again.

Meanwhile arguments about the extent of involvement of private companies provide a convenient distraction/scapegoat.

Our resident pilots can correct me if I’m wrong, but ironically fog is not a much of problem for aircraft operations. Apparently it’s the movement of ground vehicles & taxiing airplanes that causes big delays.
I'm no expert but we all know they can be flown by autopilot ( with no visibility ) and are frequently ( I guess ) flown through clouds which is also flying blind as it were.

Well, either way flight was cancelled and I'm still in Belfast, in dispute with Aer Lingus and a bit pissed having visited Boundary Brewing and Bullhouse East. I'll untangle this when I'm sober!

I've just stood for an hour from Kassel to Würzburg. A train leaving Hamburg around 2 on a Sunday afternoon for Munich, the Sunday before Bavaria goes back to work after Xmas and the day before a plannsd day of strike action.

So let's run a unit with 50% less capacity than usual, what could possibly go wrong?.......

Any chance of their finding you a hotel room for the night? I’m sure in the old days they were supposed to either put you on the next flight if possible or sort out accommodation for the night.

Yeah, I sorted that myself which may have fucked things up a bit.

Initially Aer Lingus were saying I could reschedule or apply for a refund, so I did the latter having booked an alternative flight with Queasyjet tomorrow. Now they're saying no refund and you're automatically booked on a different flight tomorrow evening.

I'm not worrying about it now. Small fry in the grand scheme of things. I'll get tetchy about it again when I'm sober and seven hours down on my flexitime tomorrow.

EDIT: One mildly ranty email later and Aer Lingus have given a full refund.

Actually you are doubly wrong, it was an aerodrome not an airport and is now closed. So you should have written 'Croydon disused aerodrome bus stop.'. This kind of sloppiness can't be acceptable.

the people who look after it now call it 'historic croydon airport'

and until fairly recently, buses have shown 'Croydon Airport' on the front (it's now 'collonades')

what's the difference between an aerodrome and an airport anyway?
