Where are you on the transport network?

The demands for urban’s most popular feature just never let up, so today let’s have a nosey around one of Heathrow Terminal Two’s lounges, last year we did United, today the Singapore Air is closed for a refurb, so in T2B that leaves…

Which is a very pleasant place to be. Wood imported from Canada, a very decent breakfast bar, a full Canadian has been consumed and there’s a very nice manned bar too which will be visited in just a mo…

Let’s face it, no matter how well redeveloped, train stations, and very often pubs in their immediate vicinity, are not places where one can expect a cheap pint or a pub you’d want to frequent, meet other people socially, or have more than one drink.
Off the top of my head:

Bristol TM
Košice
Břeclav (in there yesterday)
Taunton
Česka Třebova
Szerencs
Zwiesel
Mallaig
Carlisle

all have a cheeky decent pub, at least within 2 minutes walk.

Flew back from UK on a direct China Southern flight into the newer airport at Daxing. Only nine hours which is quicker than any other London Beijing I've done by an hour or more. Contrast between airports marked too, plus no queues in Daxing.
I’ve just looked it up and it clearly is far further away from the city than the other airports. Presumably it’s served by a high speed train?

That was great too, it's a dedicated line on the subway network so could use my card, 33 yuan into town which is about four quid. You did have to come in and out of a ticket barrier to change but very smooth.
We live way up north on other side of city but subway and bus got me home in under three hours for less than a fiver all in.

The Czech restaurant in the station didn't survive Corona, and it seems no one is opening for the 2024 season. Walked a few metres to the 2nd German pub and the prices weren't TOO much of a shock, €3.50 for 0.5l beer

Say what you like about Xi, but at least the trains run on time…😀

When I was there last year trains were only operating from the Czech side and it was rail replacement buses on the other - is it a through line again, yet?

The German side is notorious for rail replacement buses as the line is quite high maintenance. And the buses often take significantly longer.

But right now the trains are running.

You always have to change at the border station though and the fragility of the Czech timetable means you should always plan on missing the connection when heading to Germany.

Do they have free booze?
No, it's only a small lounge and no staff there that I saw. They had hot drinks, sugar free irn bru, bottled water, crisps and shortbread. There's a shower though. You show your ticket to a camera on the door to get in, so I was able to just walk in behind some other people although I think my ticket was valid for entry.

First class upgrade cost me £24 including bullshit payment processing fees on some app, on top of a £56 advance ticket, and I got two free meals plus loads of drinks on the train. Checked out of interest and walk up fares were £264 first class or £400 without a railcard
