What's for tea tonight? (#8)

Had my daughters friend round on Friday so did the chinese pork, rice and pak choi with oyster sauce then (we ended up having wraps again the day before), yesterday we went out for a picnic with friends and I couldn't be arsed to do anything that involvedmuch effort but we're off to Bulgaria for two weeks tomorrow (woohoo! :D ) and still have a fair bit of veg to use up, so we ended up having pizza with green beans and psb :D
Just me and my boy today and I've not long done us a noodle soup with more psb, green beans and some mange tout and the rest of the chinese pork, very thinly sliced....and then we had a delicious banana milkshake made with a bit of raspberry yoghurt and some clotted cream ice cream....it was that nice that I'm wondering whether to make another one now :hmm: :D

I have planned my fasting days for Wednesday and Thursday next week.
SO today I want chips.
Tomorrow is roast chicken with salad.
Tuesday left over chicken, cabbage, carrot, onion and garlic in a creamy sauce in a pie coz I found some puff pastry in the freezer :) :)

I am getting bored of cooking for one. Would love to eat a proper Sunday roast but it just ain't going to happen unless I go to the local carvery.

Got into a bit of a habit with bunging a haddock burger into the oven and boiling some veg. Probably quite healthy and not very expensive but it gets quite boring.

Will probably get some cheese and beans and do oven baked potatoes one evening.

I suppose I could buy myself a large stewing pot and make enough for a few days. That might be an idea for next week.

I have done too, when the kids are away! It's perfectly sensible cos you'll end up with leftover meat that you can use up in further meals over the course of a few days (or freeze some for some other time altogether if you have too much) which can be a proper time saver later in the week (the pay off for the time/effort spent over the roast)

Cooking for one is boring, demotivating and tiring. And there's nobody to wash up.

I don't know how you manage it Orang Utan.

I have to cook for three, which means I don't very frequently get to have exactly what I fancy, that I have to cook even if I'm knackered/ill etc and I'd be happy with a bit of toast myself...and there's STILL nobody to wash up  :(

8115 Admittedly, my son has offered (and he's 14 so doesn't need a chair :D )...and I will start encouraging that a bit more frequently soon but as it's stood previously he just does such a shit job that it's not worth it   :D (tbf he does have jobs...including hoovering weekly....I HATE hoovering ;) and my daughter does smaller jobs too....clearing away the plates, setting the table etc).

Once the summer hols are over I'm going to resolutely stick to what we've done previously and help each of them to prepare a meal of their design once a week....quicker I can get em trained up, quicker they can cook the fucking dinner themselves, eh?
I've been shit/stupid like that...I was started young and was cooking most of my own meals by 13....my mum was no fool :D

:D

Start her much, much, much, MUCH earlier than I have!

My mum used to tell me some family anecdote about how the baking skillz missed a generation down the female line of our family...her great grandmother had been a great baker, her granny, not, then her mum great again...and her not....the obvious point being made that *I* would naturally inherit the GREAT BAKER gene  ........................thus keeping her in fucking cakes for a fair few years while I foolishly basked in the 'glory'

(I haven't told my daughter the story, obviously :hmm: )

Two kinds of Uncle Ben's rice :- "Mexican Bean" and "Mediterranean vegetable" - discounted locally.
I can't say I could tell much difference - especially when I added tahini, left-over baked beans and chutney.

Washed down with an Aldi Pays D'Oc blend.
(I swear that's giving me a headache :hmm: )

You do know that men deliberately mess up chores they hate so they don't get asked again? A classic tactic, and works like a charm as the women get so annoyed they just do it themselves. Have I let the cat out the bag? :D

I don't have a choice though, do I?
I like cooking anyway.
Can't be arsed cooking for anyone else either tbh as I feel I have to impress

Do you get really slobby and just shovel it in as no-one is looking? Chuck it in a bowl, spoon, and tea towel on lap to mop up spillage. I know I do! :D

Me and a big bowl of chilli n garlic noodles is a disgraceful sight.

You can't take me anywhere...

I stopped in a motorway services the week before last to get something to eat, there was this slow cooked lamb shank there, it looked so good I just had to have it, with peas and mash, it was absolutely lush.

I would definitely cook lamb shank for one!!

:)

This is not just a male thing. I used to do it as a kid.
And Badgers is much better and more thorough with house work than me although I am not too bad.

No! I usually live with a flatmate and I eat sloppily in company anyway. I'm a loud eater and I've always got my gob open

Something like a boiled bacon/baked ham is great for one. It lasts for ages cold in the fridge and makes great sarnies. :)

Easy enough to do - one or two shanks is enough for one and cheap too

I did slow roasted pork belly with roast spuds, parsnips, carrots, steamed broccoli and gravy.

Another failed attempt at perfect crackling :( .

The belly fat came pre-scored. I scalded it with boiling water, then gave it a coating a of oil and some salt. Half hour in a 220 degree fan assisted oven, then 2.5 hours at about 150. Rested for 20 minutes. The outer part of the crackling was hard as nails, the underneath still squishy fat, and the main part of the roast was slightly over cooked.

I was sure I'd got it right this time too :hmm: This is the only thing I can't cook now, even though I've read all the threads here on it, just doesn't come out right.
