What's for tea tonight? (#8)

Higgedy pies with mash. Normally with peas and gravy but I've got one of those massive baked bean fridge jars that needs using up so I expect I'll have beans & Mrs R will want peas and gravy. I may have gravy with my baked beans, even though it sounds like a really stupid idea nut I want both. Fucking stubborn, me.
Nowt wrong with beans and gravy. My mother used to always give us baked beans with our cottage pie, and always did gravy with it - and it WENT

I made broccoli cheese souffles once and they were fookin lovely, so I might let you all off this broccoli and cheese sauce nonsense as long as you don't continue to attempt this barbaric and heretic bastardisation of the good name of macaroni cheese.

Was going to be chicken Kiev and salad, but me and the boy are both feeling shite (manflu for him and dodgy tum for me ) so I think it might be a nice restorative chicken and veg spicy soup instead :)

I finally got round to making these at the weekend - OMG, how fucking tasty are they?
(very fucking tasty in case you were wondering).
I offered one to the bloke and he said 'oh, just half a one for me'.
He broke off half and handed it back to me, but before he'd even finished the first mouthful, he'd snatched it back again.
I'll definitely be making them again.

I'm in full agreement with you there, Boatie (AND the BoatieBloke! :D )...REALLY quick to knock up too, eh?!
We had the last ones from the last batch the other week :( - need to restock! :D

funnily enough, my dad saw some cauliflower in the fridge that i had used some of yesterday and now we're having cauliflower cheese. :)

what's a panni?

I was going to just post 'how mean'....but then I thought it's OU and he may genuinely not have noticed my spelling mistake (twice). So yes it was a panini (which is bread toasted). I love broccoli but I just would not serve it in a panini or with chips.

My son's friends mostly don't eat ANY VEGETABLES AT ALL, tbf :D (except for the one who's a veggie, obv - although I made them mushroom vol-au-vent type things....and he *just* doesn't like MUSHROOMS  :D ) so I generally don't bother stressing them out by adding them to the plate in the first place  :D (one of his friends couldn't even cope with a frozen chicken burger, exactly like one he'd eat at home, just cos it wasn't HIS OWN MUM who cooked it :( hehe :D ).
But otherwise, yes. Yes, I would! :p

I've found through years of trial and error that pasta with tomato sauce seems to be the safest bet, ftr :hmm: (although you must remember to check whether they like CHEESE on it ).

how do you cope with kids being weird about food? my nephew only seems to like 3 different meals and he won't eat any of them without ketchup. i'm worried that it's too late already and he's gonna grow up a weirdly fussy eater.

My son was always great but my daughter was quite fussy - especially about slightly gloopy textured things like soup and mash :hmm: but she's got MUCH better (and fairly recently, too - she's six now, btw) and that was just by encouraging her to KEEP trying things....just making the point that she might STILL not like them, but that there again she might (and I told her about all the various things I hated when I was little - spinach and cabbage for eg) and that then it would be a shame if she hadn't discovered that she did like them NOW after all!

And really, *really* trying not to make a big deal out of it on the occasions where she just seemed not to like ANYTHING AT ALL (quite frustrating, tbf, especially when it was stuff she USED to wolf down! :D ) but equally being sort of *low level* encouraging when she did.... :hmm:

I've also sometimes been genuinely impressed by some of the things they like (olives for eg) that are quite *grown up* foods...and they seem to react quite well to that.

Hopefully, if you just keep casually giving him the *opportunity* to keep trying things, he'll start being braver...and once he is it's much easier because you have real examples to remind him of the NEXT time he tries something new.

Often on here people say shit about how they'd never, EVER cook two separate meals for their kids, too (yeah, right :D )...but even that's quite helpful...my daughter would be much more likely to try stuff that I've made for myself (from MY plate) than if I was to present her with her own plate of it, iyswim.... ;)

I remember at primary school age going to a friends house and facing a plate including massive bits of broccoli - I was fine with the heads of broc but this was stalks and leaves and everything. I found out I liked it though.

I didn't eat raw tomatoes until I was around 18. Love the things now. Same with loads of different stuff. I think this is fairly common.

Finally decided on leg of lamb so lamb, roasted beetroot and carrots and spiced red cabbage. The beetroot is fucking HUGE. I hope it's still edible :hmm:

Definitely 'aving then, nice one.

One of the best things I eat when I have an attack of the munchies is beef mince, OXO cube and a teeny bit of water added once it's brown then a tin of baked beans chucked in. Perfect with potato croquettes

EDIT:

Bangers and mash was delicious. No messing around. Plate of creamy mash topped with Cumberland's and onion gravy.

OMFG that was amazing :D Bought some chicken broth thing from Sainsburys and then added chillies, veg and more chicken (well the boy did ). Just the ticket :) And there's some lemon tart and creme friche in the fridge for pud as well

Make a big and very slow cooked Risotto. Chicken, celery, leeks, frankfurters, onion, mushroom, bay leaves, a big Chilli, stock, paprika, parmesan and every else I had lying about. It looks like dinner, lunch and tomorrows dinner at least :)
