What stupid shit has Trump done today?

I think that the Jan 6 stuff was quite a shock to the system. I really don't believe that they'd allow it to get that far again. A bigger risk might be that the Authorities overreact if there's a next time.

Yeah, I think that for all there's quite a lot of right wing sympathisers within the US security services, they weren't really expecting what happened. Plus they're now a group who have killed police officers and wouldn't be protesting in support of someone who was at the time still technically the president and so in an influential position. If they try similar again they'll get the full quasi-military crackdown response.

The likelihood of more lone shooter type stuff will be even higher though.

On a complete tangent, but what happens in the UK if someone refuses to take an oath or affirmation?

If for example, a witness were to declare 'I am here under the threat of penalty, I do not wish to give evidence, and will not give an undertaking to tell the truth'?

AFAIK you can't be forced to be a witness, you could just refuse and not turn up, or even turn up and not say anything. You wouldn't be there 'under threat of penalty' which sounds a bit Freeman of the land to me!

I think in the US for a Grand Jury you can be compelled though, and in trouble if you refuse.

Happy to be corrected though.

that is happening all the time in the US anyway, and most of it not explicitly politically motivated to the best of my knowledge

this forum's thread on US mass shootings has essentially given up on tracking them, so frequent are they. you have to kill at least 10 people to even have a chance of getting a post on here

I don't think Trump's exactly endearing himself to the pool of potential jurors here - he's demanded that the trial be moved to West Virginia, which in a staggering coincidence happens to be America's whitest state

CONSIDERING THE FACT THAT I HAD TO FLY TO A FILTHY, DIRTY, FALLING APART, & VERY UNSAFE WASHINGTON, D.C., TODAY, & THAT I WAS THEN ARRESTED BY MY POLITICAL OPPONENT, WHO IS LOSING BADLY TO ME IN THE POLLS, CROOKED JOE BIDEN, IT WAS A VERY GOOD DAY!

Trump's defense is going to settle around the 1st amendment apparently. And you can lie under it.

I know that is what they've been going around saying, but I'd be amazed if that is his actual defence given how vulnerable he would be if he used it - they jury will almost certainly get told about all the actions he took beforehand, and all the people (of whom Pence will be the most prominent) who said what he was doing was wrong. They'll be left with a choice of absolute and consequence-free speech for politicians or actually starting a riot with lies is wrong.

Rather more likely is him throwing one or more of his lawyers under the bus and saying he was told falsehoods by them, and was so badly advised that he genuinely believed what they were telling him. Giulani and Powell especially went up and gave multiple speeches where absolute fibs were uttered and it will have a grain of truth to it. Even Pence pointed to the crackpot lawyers who had advised him to do this.

That's my gut feeling too. He has form for this also. Anyone but me.

Well the lawyer (John Lauro) apparently is a quite respected shark in the waters he swims in.

It might be the 'he's crazy but he really believes it SO there's no malicious intent involved' type defense. Reminds me of the David Irving trial.

Indeed, but of course that defence fails the moment one of the lawyers (who of course now have no defence, if advice of counsel is going to be Trump's defence) flips and says that Trump told them to find a way to overturn the election.

The "free speech" defence has the advantage that it plays to the narrative of an evil woke deep state trying to take away individaul liberties. That means nothing in the courtroom - but very much help reinforce the "Trump the partiotic freedom martyr" shit his base lap up.

Jack Smith has filed a motion with the court already after Trump issued the following all caps threat

Trump also called on the supreme court to intervene and halt ALL cases against him

Kindly, this appears to admit to using campaign finances to fund his legal battles which is a breach of campaign finances laws too. Fuck me he's stupid.

Jack Smith's response was to file a motion

The judge has denied his motion to delay having to respond. They claimed they needed more time but they had time to file the response asking for more time and his lead counsel has time to do all their friendly Sunday shows.
