What new foods have you tried recently?

Ya'll need to stop and put down whatever it is you're doing, get yourself down to the shops and buy yourself some of this shit! Sweet and fruity, I'd swear it was a jam if blindfolded. Slightly subtle chilli massage on the tongue, not overly vinegary like some chutneys can be and you can actually taste that there's apricots and peach in there. Had it with some eggs last night but I imagine it'd be sterling with some good cheese or some chicken/fish.:thumbs:

Mexgrocer has green tacos on special offer - they're normal corn tortillas but with cactus in the mix. They were good - kind of fresher tasting. And dirt cheap too!
My pal in Austin waxes lyrical about the pleasures of fried cactus. Just burn off the spines and you're good to go.

I've never had truffles but I've always presumed they'd be rank. That sort of exclusive toff food always is. Caviar, for example. More money than sense, etc.

Nope, truffles are lovely and should not smell or taste anything like rubber or sewers. You might have got duff imitation/or out of date ones if your experiences have been this bad. Truffles of all sorts are, yes, stupidly overpriced and not everyone likes them - but they really are special and different and some ppl love them. imho it's a much more understandable luxury than caviar (which doesn't float my boat at all.)

Going back up the thread - have found out that pimenton (smoked paprika) will make almost anything taste sort-of-like chorizo, so if you have veggie guests or are adapting recipes with chorizo to no-meat versions, a tsp or so of this gorgeous red stuff can do that. AND: it's bloody delicious sprinked over a plain fried egg or two as well.

I'll take a pic of the paprikas I use every day, one sweet and one smoky, elevates most dishes nicely (especially soups and stews).

Goat gouda. Lovely tang but not so much that it leaves that claggy taste in your mouth.

Dr Karg's tomato and mozzarella crispbreads. Not as moreish as the emmental ones which are like "healthy" cheese straws that take you an hour to chew. I'll stick to the emmental.

Ritter rum, raisin and hazelnuts chocolate. I had no idea it existed until spotted in Sainsbury the other week. I've gone off rum and raisin fudge slightly cos the sugar rush is just too immense and gives me a sugar rage. This is the replacement now! Not too sweet, conservatively sized pack, kick of rum flavour on eating and indeed opening the packet. Not overwhelmed with nuts.

Oh yeah, that's good shit that. Been a while since I had any. Head for your local Saffer shops people

drinks, you add a few squirts to some water and it makes a delicious fruity drink.
They are quite pricey though at around £2.50, but I mainly buy them as I got fed up of buying huge bottles of squash at the supermarket, and wanted to cut down on waste/recycling

Caviar is lush!! It's really fresh and fishy and bursts in your mouth!

You can get it reasonably as long as you don't want the Balugar or whatever it is called.

I had black fungus recently. Very nice; would recommend. Bit of a faff-on having to re-hydrate it for an hour, though.

Can't stand the stuff, but each to their own.

I had some garam masala coated peanuts the other day. They were okay but I couldn't eat a lot.
