What animals/wildlife have you seen today?

Obvs we all know a hedgie out in the day might be (a) in a spot of bother or (b) a mum with little ones, who needs to feed up.

Pretty sure this is (b).

Heard her rustling through the dead leaves, put some food down. Looked very healthy, was moving with no issues (and fast, when the kids next door got too loud) and ate a load.

Always feels like a privilege to be that close ❤️

Following this, I put the camera out on the patio. Appears I accidentally switched to photo mode from video, so the results weren't great (hedgehog bum disappearing out of shot etc) but this was fun. Cats are interested in the new.

I haven't got photos as I don't carry a phone while camping but yesterday we saw; a small pod of hectors dolphins (like 5 or 6), a seal pup sleeping on a jetty, two dead possums and one live one running about the foreshore (while I was on a night quest), loads of Weka (bush hens), two wild goats, the tail end of a deer, 2 NZ falcons seemingly hunting as a pair, and some giant gulls dive bombing for fish.

My wife is annoyed that every time we see dophins she's off doing something else. They were jumping for about 5 mins while she was on the throne, just as she came back they were tiny specs in the distance but at the time, I was fishing with my son and one jumped out of the water just a few metres away from us (yes we stopped fishing for a while). :)

A badger snuffling along on my walk home from mums, we see them often but this one seemed happy to share the lane with me, he didn't looked mythered or try jumping into the verge, he just plodded along looking for titbits - it made me smile and feel fuzzy inside :)

I saw two swans yesterday (no sign of signets), I'd sat on the wall next to the overflow bit for the river, dog on wall next to me wagging tail. Up come these two swans and give it big wings and hard stares. I don't know if they were hustling for bread or telling me and the dog to mind ourselves but Gracie, the enormous coward, set up a tremble straight away.

On holiday we saw a pair of Griffon Vultures hovering over Pefki Gorge in Crete.

Too far away for a photo, but I had the binoculars on them for a couple of minutes and they were magnificent. I get quite moved when I see something that unusual in the wild. Last time that happened was watching Minke whales in the Outer Hebrides. Brilliant stuff. :)

Usually here in Sunderland it's rabbits and squirrels in the local park. If I'd gone into the city centre last night it would have been a load of wild right wing racist animals.

😡

Animals are better than them, friend - animals act due to hunger or fear or protecting their young from immediate risk, not hate.
Human stuff is certainly a bit worrying atm however.
