US election 2012

Why is New Mexico Dem when they're surrounded by some of the strongest Republican states (excepting Colorado)?

They have a higher percentage of Latinos than any state in the nation, and Latinos vote Dem by a 2-1 margin. It's generally accepted that long-term population trends will, in time, make most of the southwest vote like New Mexico. This is part of the reason that white folks have been freaking out in Arizona. They see that NM will one day be their future. Until quite recently, New Mexico and Colorado were reliably Republican just like all those other western states near them. Those days are gone thanks to immigration.

I thought that but the same demographics apply to Texas (now, not in the future), surely?
Not quite yet. Issue is getting the Latino population to vote: they're the least likely to turn out generally. That's starting to change. Texas is already going slightly blue in other votes, being fought by Republican gerrymandering of districts but that will only work for so long

Robert Gibbs of the Obama camp now on Fox. If he was told to not appear smug during the interview, he has failed in this task.

Some of the news websites are really struggling with bandwidth. Having to do a fair amount of refreshing to keep them up and unfrozen <<shakes fist at router>>

So which way is it going to go in the aftermath for the Republicans?

Will they actually assess how the demographics of the US has changed so considerably, and is continuing to do so, and alter their strategy to reflect that; or will they dig their heels even further in, listen to their no doubt freshly enraged teabagger base, and just hope that Obama does something really egregious that pisses off a bunch of Dems ready for 2016?

More right wing is the only way they can go, I reckon. Their base demands it.

Santa Rosa County is coming in now. Heavily Romney but looks like Obama's overall lead is holding

Do you reckon he won or lost paper/scissors/stone to get that gig? Do you reckon they hiss as a democrat goes through the studio and put bromide in his coffee?

I've been sad enough to tot up the totals from the county votes (as sohwn on the guardian site) for Florida. So many of the red states have counted 100% of the votes, it is all but impossible for Obama to lose. 80,000+ majority

They should do the first, they will do the second. No doubt the recriminations over 2012 will effectively trash Christie's run in 2016 as well.

Obama is now within 36,000 votes in Virginia. Closing fast and it's the Democrat counties still declaring

Well that's what I initially thought. But there are plenty of Republican talking heads who are being quite open about how that change in demographics will mean that this will just continue to happen unless they change tack, and they're aware of how important it is. But of course, that section of the base is way behind that, and don't give a damn about changing demographics, other than wanting to change them back again.

Fox news is fascinating, they just had a female commentator basically saying that Women should have based their vote on the economy and not on their reproductive rights - she said that women had disappointed her
