Urban75 Album of the Year 1958

belboid

Exasperated, not angry.
Well, it's almost that time of year again, so to whet our tastebuds, let's start with some polls from earlier years....

1958 - albums were properly being released now, wiki has a magnificent 83 of them listed! 1958 in music - Wikipedia

Frank, Miles, Ella, Doris, Bill, Perry and the legendary Teresa Brewer amongst them. But who will triumph?

So, usual rules apply. PM me a list of your top....whatever number you like actually - I doubt anyone will make it to over ten - in order, and I'll add them all up. NO COMPILATIONS. Live albums fine. BY NOON ON MONDAY OCTOBER 1

Looking at what was released in 1958, it seems there was a post-sputnik/space race era craze for space themed cover art, especially amongst the lounge/easy-listening scene:

(None of these are the best album of 1958)

I've wasted far too much time thinking about this, so just submitted mine. Though not up top for me, it was a big year for Cal Tjader

Surprised at the lack of soundtracks submitted so far.

I have decided not to listen to any of the (no doubt often excellent) albums mentioned here hat I haven't actually heard before. Only stuff i already knew.

If I'm doing this I'm doing it tonight, I've knackered my computer at home so I'm going to have to "work" late tonight to get this done.

I'm struggling with this one. Somehow 57 was easier and 59 would be much easier.

I voted for one, but it wasn't King Creole or South Pacific...

My personal rule throughout these album lists has been to only vote for stuff I have already heard at least once or twice. To do otherwise doesn't seem quite in the spirit of the thing somehow.

But I'll certainly listen to other people's picks after the results are in...

My top two is sorted. Will consider the rest over the weekend, ready for Fritterday Noctober the 32nd or whenever it is.

I love a good list but you have to be careful - Discogs has Blue Train down as 1957 so I think that was in my list last year when we did that...
Good point. We did have this discussion then, and strenuous research showed Blue Note has it as released in December 1957. So let that be the final word.

Some people vote's will be amended accordingly :)

After my own "what year was this fucking album actually released" debacle last year I'm searching my choices in the run of Billboard in google books. Good news the one I got wrong for 1957 is eligible this year. Bad news one of my initial picks for 58 was in fact 57

It's a particular problem with jazz albums because the internet has diligently hoovered up many decades of confusion between recording and release dates.

Might be an idea to list the things we think are eligible. These are pukka afaics :

I'd say just agree to use Discogs or an actual music reference book maybe?

If we list them all we'll just end up in spoiler hell...

Take the point. Bit late to agree on what standard reference to put in 'dictionary corner' for 1958. Perhaps just a general warning to be careful as with the issue of whether RnB and Rock 'n' Roll albums from this period are compilations.

Yep I've got it worked out. Spent the entire day skiving at work trying to find some proto Bossa or electronic/modern classical and nothing quite made it. But good gods are there some great r'n'b albums that year.
