Undercover policing enquiry

Tuesday: The Inquiry heard summaries of the witness statements of spycops HN33 and HN88 and then live evidence from spycop HN65.
Video here and here but HN65s evidence was audio only.

Transcript of todays hearing here (PDF)

The Inquiry has been much quicker off the mark putting up supporting items of evidence for these three. So lets get linky!!

HN33 - "Kathryn Lesley ( 'Lee') Bonser" - (Greenham Common Women's Peace Camp, Lambeth Women for Peace, SWP) - Written Witness Statement here (PDF)
181 items of evidence - Links on this page

HN88 - "Timothy Spence" - (Hackney Campaign Against the Police Bill, Hackney Police Monitoring Group, National Campaign Against the Police Bill, East London Campaign Against the Police Bill (ELCAPB) / East London Campaign Against Racist Attacks and Police Harassment (ELCARAPH) and also CND) - Written Witness Statement here (PDF)
140 items of evidence - Links on this page

HN65 - "John Kerry" - (CND) - First Witness Statement here (PDF) Second Witness Statement here (PDF)

MI5 does not have to say if abusive man was a spy, judges rule - BBC News

The security service can continue to neither confirm nor deny whether a man who attacked his girlfriend with a machete was an MI5 agent, judges have ruled. In 2022, a BBC News investigation established through multiple sources that the man - known as X for legal reasons - was an MI5 agent. He used his MI5 role to coercively control Beth, his ex-partner. He was physically and sexually abusive, and was filmed threatening to kill her and then attacking her with a machete.

Wednesday: evidence from three people involved with the anti-nuclear weapons and women's peace movements

First a summary of the statement of Rebecca Johnson - Written statement here (PDF)
Then live evidence from Hilary Moore - Written statement here (PDF) and Jane Hickman - Written statement here (PDF)

Video here and here. And transcript of today's hearing here (PDF)

That's it for this week. I think it was originally intended to hear evidence on Thursday from HN33 - "Kathryn Lesley ( 'Lee') Bonser" but she is not co-operating

Tom Fowler, who has been live x-tweeting from the Inquiry amongst other things, raises the issue I have wondered about:

Tom Fowler x-tweets: ''The video of Roger Pearce being questioned at the #spycops inquiry is STILL not online. Probably the most damning live evidence that has been filmed as is meant to have a general release.''

The video of Roger Pearce being questioned at the #spycops inquiry is STILL not online. Probably the most damning live evidence that has been filmed as is meant to have a general release.
Maybe it'll be released over the weekend, but until then, here's all my tweets from 9th July whilst he was speaking:
X-tweet link

He then posts the texts of all of his x-tweets from that day into two VERY long x-tweets. Here they are in arguably a more readable form archived as a web page

Roger Pearce's evidence, and the evidence sesssion from the previous afternoon with Dave Morris and Steve Sorba, were not live streamed because a non-police witness named in evidence had been granted a Reporting Restriction Order and this led to concerns that they might be named during the evidence sessions. (I gather something of this kind, about someone else, occured the day after Pearce gave evidence, leading to a brief break in proceedings). The video of the session with Dave Morris and Steve Sorba has since gone up. But not the video of Roger Pearce. One possibility I suppose is that he and his Counsel saw how badly he came across in the hearing room and that legal arguments are taking place about the video.

While we wait the written transcript is online — morning (PDF) afternoon (PDF) — but Tom Fowlers x-tweets give a very good flavour of Pearce's evidence.

Monday: Evidence from spycop HN25 - "Kevin Douglas" (Troops Out Movement) (The Broadwater Farm Defence Campaign is also listed but this only seems to refer to him reporting about contacts between TOM and BFDC).

Originally Lindsey German was also scheduled to give evidence but the questioning of HN25 went on longer than anticipated.

Transcript's not yet up as I post this. I'll post a link when it is. ETA: It's now up here (PDF)
Video (audio only) morning session and afternoon session

Two written statements by HN25, and a draft and final statement to an earlier internal inquiry, Operation Herne, can be found on this page.
223 items of evidence relating to him (examples of reports drawing on information he supplied, or referring to him, etc.) Links on this page.

I have seen reference somewhere to a spycop in South London BNP in c1993. Not HN58 so who? Very interested as this overlaps with both Tim Hepple and other assets inside the BNP such as ‘Agent Arthur’. Any help appreciated

I had him previously logged as UCL040 before Herne and then UCPI muscled in on the nominals

Based on this list and a process of elimination, it seems like it would be HN89 (deceased, no cover name released yet), as Francis disclosed that one of his contemporaries had infiltrated the BNP at the time of the 1993 Welling demo, and was in the bookshop itself on the day.

As far as I'm aware HN58 was a manager (DCI)1997-2001 but also previously undercover - real and cover names are both restricted. HN58 replaced Keith Edmondson, who was in place at the same time Bob Lambert was Ops Controller.

Thanks this helps slightly! They are clearly coy about antics on the far right as lots of violence involved. Cover name would help greatly

The evidence session by HN85 - Roger Pearce aka "Roger Thorley" on July 9th was not livestreamed because of a reporting restriction over somebody else. Video of the morning session has since been put op (it is on this page), but still not the afternoon session. Transcripts for both sessions were put online, but now the transcript for the afternoon session seems to have gone.
Below is a PDF of the google cache version of it in case anyone wants to play "guess what the issue might be".

The Inquiry has also put up some statements by people relating to Pearce's evidence.

A second witness statement by Patrizia Giambi responding to a Special Branch report referring to her - it can be found on this page
A second witness statement by Michael Zeitlin (Advisory Service for Squatters) regarding Pearce's claims of a bomb on the North London Line and that squatters in Kilner House were planning violence against the polive evicting them - statement here (PDF)
And a witness statement by Dave McCabe (Freedom, 121). He was refused core participant status but was extensively named in Pearce's evidence. He responds and refutes many of Pearce's claims - statement here (PDF)

Tom Fowler, host of @spycopsinfo podcast, has shared online that current witness, Trevor Morris aka "Anthony 'Bobby' Lewis" aka "Bobby McGee", is also known as "Carlton King", and the host of the "Carlton King Black Spy Podcast" and author of "Black Ops: The incredible true story of a British secret agent".

Is this known to the Inquiry, and will it take this into account when assessing the truthfulness of the evidence he is giving?

It's safe to say it is under lively discussion at present

My understanding is that the book was known to the Inquiry but various other things were not.

The lawyers representing the people targeted by Morris were not - by my understanding - aware of Morris having written a memoir as King before last night.

Some of the most curious redactions in his witness statement relate to his time in A Squad (and later SO1).

You can sort of understand a hesitancy in acknowledging - for wont of a hypothetical example - a five year secondment to MI6.

But boring old close protection? Babysitting politicians?

What's the embarrassment angle; the photos with PMs and Ministers and visiting dignitaries, or the thought of spycops with a very loose sense of sexual ethics waving guns around entering the public consciousness?

Transcript of Friday's third evidence session with HN78 - Trevor Morris aka 'Bobby Lewis' aka 'Bobby McGhee' (ANL, SWP) is finally up

It's here (PDF)

Video is here - morning session and afternoon session

As you will see there are numerous redactions where Morris spoke about matters subject to restriction orders.

The weekly summary by the Campaign Opposing Police Surveillance is not yet up.

For the Inquiry that's it until the 30th September when Tranche 2 Phase 2 hearings begin.

The video of the afternoon live evidence session with HN85 - Roger Pearce aka "Roger Thorley" (Freedom Press, 121 Bookshop) on the 9th July is still not up, and the transcript which was initially put up is still down. I speculated that this might be because of legal challenges from him. Having looked at the transcript more closely over the weekend I suspect it may actually be because they are struggling with the redactions required to comply with the restricted reporting order, granted in respect of a non-police individual, in a way which doesn't permit jigsaw identification. Could be completely wrong though.
