Ukraine

Uh-huh. I actually think that this, combined with the failure to build for intervention in Syria, is America's Suez. Unlike Britain, it's not going to lose its superpower status, as UK did over the Suez affair, but it will find that its pretensions to dominance take a severe knock..

Vietnam was America's Suez. More recently, Iraq.

Rostislav Stepanovich Vasilko

Apparently hes the secretary of the Communist Party in Lviv, a fash stronghold, and was recognised and grabbed on the street by the fascists in Kiev. According to a number of reports hes in a hospital bed pretty much surrounded by fascists after the beatings and torture he recieved. IIRC correctly the fash told the western media who wanted to know why they were half lynching him at the time theyd caught a sniper.
This is purportedly Vasilkos statement from his hospital bed.

“Comrades, I’m Rostislav Stepanovich Vasilko, First Secretary of the KPU Gorkom in Lvov; the Banderovtsy beat me up badly in Kiev. They stalk my mom; they put out death threats against my children. They threatened to kill my common-law wife and me. Help me to find political asylum in another country.
On 22 February, from 11.00 to 23.00, Euromaidan ruffians tortured me in Mariinsky Park; they drove needles under my fingernails and beat me with clubs and fists. They punctured my right lung; they broke three ribs, my nasal septum, and a facial cyst. They cracked my skull and I have a second-degree concussion. I got bruises all over me. Tomorrow, the doctors will do a spinal tap. I’m in the deep doo-doo! The Banderovtsy cleaned me out! They took my documents, my money, and my cross on a gold chain”.

According t another blogger

“One of my friends, a communist from Lvov, is now in hospital with a cracked skull, ruptured kidneys, torn nails, punctured right lung, broken ribs, his nose broken in three places. For hours, they beat him in one of the most beautiful parks in Kiev; then, they made sure to threaten his common-law wife, telling her that the same fate awaited her. It’s impossible to get him out of there now, as he’s just out of surgery and he’s still on the mend; besides which, ‘guards’ from the new junta secured the hospital… they patrol all the floors, they dump together Euromaidan activists, anti-Maidan patriots, and ordinary citizens, all in one common batch {that means that the Banderovtsy in hospital would rat out anyone trying to rescue anti-Maidan patriots: editor}. How do we get him out of there? Where do we take him and how do we get him there? It’s a devilish pickle”.

[The Banderovtsy] are already doing it, there’s a whole list of others… unfortunately, he’s not alone in this situation. Specifically, about Rostislav…we have a problem with getting him out of there to safety, the main difficulty is getting him out of the hospital as he’s not on his feet, and there’s a triple cordon of thugs outside the hospital”.

FFS. Had Radio 5 on for 2 minutes.

"we'll have a look at what Russias case actually is and if there's any validity to it at all"

Can you imagine them saying that about one of countless US invasions, let alone our own imperialist bluster?

I can imagine Russian media saying it about US or UK invasions.

Sheer hell. Shows how in control of the streets - & hospitals - they are.

Fri 28Feb interview of Volodimir Ishchenko, first published yesterday (Tu 4Mar):

http://www.criticatac.ro/lefteast/volodymyr-ishchenko-for-transform/ (a re-post of the i/v - only put here to draw attention to this Anglophone site of a Romanian-based group, & to show that not everyone has left the country)

His Guardian article, F 28Feb on 'no revo, only rotation of elites', has already been linked here; he's the editor of Spil'ne/Commons, http://commons.com.ua/

btw, have any western journalists come out so strong about imperial interventions and kept their jobs? pretty impressed with Abby.

shes on at the minute, still not sacked, still not dead, and still critcising Russias actions, pointing out that shes regularly criticised Western military interventions and the western media completely ignored her. But now shes gone viral for criticising Russia. As well as naming a number of high profile journalists whove been sacked in the United states for going off script, such as Phil Donaghue.

And pretty annoyed that its seen in the west as outrageous for there to be a news station that dares promotes a Russian view of world events, as if the western views promoted by the others are innately superior.
Also she says shes not going to Crimea either . And far from being pissed off with her RT are retweeting what she said and happy to romote it

Glenn Greenwald gives his take on it here

looks like that russian meet our deadline or war line the western media have been shreiking about was a complete load of bollocks now too . And nobody seems to have asked the Ukranian junta leader as to how exactly he knows theres 16000 Russian troops invading Ukraine. Who counted them ?

So, fascists seem pretty embedded in the new Ukrainian government. - http://www.channel4.com/news/svoboda-ministers-ukraine-new-government-far-right

Just a thought I've been having... If Syriza win the next election in Greece, subversion from Golden Dawn is inevitable, especially as they are embedded in the security forces. Now Golden Dawn may have a foreign government as a direct sponsor, which increases their strength considerably. The situation in Ukraine may not lead to WW3, but it may lead to an unpredictable Syria-style civil war centered in Greece...

Stepping back from the brink of war, Vladimir Putin talked tough but cooled tensions in the Ukraine crisis Tuesday, saying Russia has no intention "to fight the Ukrainian people" but reserved the right to use force.

As the Russian president held court in his personal residence, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met with Kiev's fledgling government and urged Putin to stand down.
"It is not appropriate to invade a country, and at the end of a barrel of a gun dictate what you are trying to achieve," Kerry said. "That is not 21st-century, G-8, major nation behaviour."

Although nerves remained on edge in Crimea, with Russian troops firing warning shots to ward off Ukrainian soldiers, global markets catapulted higher on tentative signals that the Kremlin was not seeking to escalate the conflict. Kerry brought moral support and a $1 billion aid package to a Ukraine fighting to fend off bankruptcy.

I can't believe you managed to jump of that shark Fonz

I meant Syria style in that it would probably involve foreign fighters on both sides.

It's a bit of a big leap I know, just something I was thinking about. *shrug*

Probably no point trying to predict how strong far right influence in the Ukrainian government will affect the far right elsewhere in Europe until we have more clues on how much power they will actually have and how they will behave, but that's one possibility that comes to mind. Depends on quite a lot of factors though. I probably shouldn't derail the thread with idle speculation just yet.

That's a pretty crap list of "14 insane moments";

4 - "accusing the US of hypocrisy over Iranian and Ukrainian nuclear weapons"

6 - "Russia is acting to protect Russians"

etc

There's only a couple of proper nonsense points in the whole list.
None of them are insane. What they are though, is incredibly crude and barely bothering to hide their interests - media over here undoubtedly attempt to put comparable messages across but in much more subtle ways. When was the last time you saw the BBC just make something up and then deliberately illustrate it with pictures from something else entirely on such important issues (see the refugee crisis stories for example or any of these examples - orgreave was 30 years ago before anyone brings that up and they learnt not to be so crude as a result). This puts RT closer to Iraqi invasions news Syrian state news and pres tv (they both allow conspiracy freaks leading voices) than anything else.

lyndsey oil refinery strike where Nicky boy deliberately truncated a quote to make them look like racists was a good un.

It's basically Fox but syndicated to Russia, right?
I don't really know what fox is like really beyond it not being the state broadcaster and people laughing at it for its bias. I do know that some of those people laughing now seem to be taking rt seriously when it does things very similar to what made them laugh with fox and ignoring the state broadcaster element.

Isn't it RT that sometimes broadcasts tinfoil hat stuff?
Well, this Abby Martin whose opinion pieces are now being fronted as ensuring the news reporting is as objective as can be is a hardcore 911 truther. And note, the people fronting her never follow through and ask why she felt she had to say what she said in such a away - never ask what she felt she was countering at rt.

RT appeals to those desperate for "an alternative view" at times like this.

What the same people often fail to appreciate is that Fox deploys the same appeal - its editorial line springs from the period when the Right successfully promoted the idea that they were an oppressed minority, held down by the Liberal Media Elite.

And, yes, RT does from time to time run fruitloopery. My impression is that it's not as bad as the official news agency. Look for flying saucer stuff :)

It was just a quip about Fox's objectivity - wasn't meant to be a substantive point. Though whenever there is a military crisis a casual observer could be forgiven for thinking Fox was a state broadcaster.

http://www.unn.com.ua/uk/news/1312633-v-uzhgorodi-nevidomi-napali-na-v-o-mera. According to the article the stabbing was the second attack on a politician in the Carpathian Ruthenia region, after they attempted to crack down on thugs from Kiev. I'm guessing those thugs are probably Right Sector.

That's another whole region for them to try and destabilise and bring in neigbouring states as well - and with the most important pipelines going through it. Great stuff.

An American carrier battle group is never going to be "easy meat" no matter where they're situated.

One should never say "never".

After all, didn't a Marine Corps general show just how easy it is to wipe out an entire fleet in an enclosed area, way back in 2002, simply by using non-conventional means of assault? :)

They're also banned from entering the Black Sea under the terms of the Montreux Convention Regarding the Regime of the Straits so it's not going to happen anyway.

Does the Convention deny them the Sea of Marmara too?

I would imagine this crisis will encourage Europe to develop more of their domestic energy resources, including fracking.

relying on that corrupt group in Moscow to power your economy is not a good idea.

Almost as bad as relying on China.

Nothing is happening this way...the idea of an ACBG in this conflict is fucking hopefully laughable.

No one has the stomach for this conflict. Ruskie's have already taken Crimea. Then they will probably pull back slightly for issues re.currency whilst annexing bases and land etc.

I may be wrong....hope not, but I may check the betting sites for odds on this.

They won't annexe the Crimea, or any land there, if they have any strategic sense (although given Putin's autocracy, that isn't a given!). Both sides will sit down at a table and, with "international oversight", negotiate a leasing arrangement for Russian bases and infrastructure to supply them, plus a shared airspace arrangement. The Russians are desperate to retain the Black Sea fleet (such as it is) and the access to the Med that it provides. The Russians want to retain access both for trade reasons, and due to realpolitik.
