Ukraine

This from Lyndesy German of Counterfire and Stop the War (not this one, this ones cracking) is astonishing:

Those who demand anti-war activity here in Britain against Russia are ignoring the history and the present reality in Ukraine and Crimea. The B52 liberals only oppose wars when their own rulers do so, and support the ones carried out by our governments. The job of any anti-war movement is to oppose its own government's role in these wars, and to explain what that government and its allies are up to.

Pro Russian protestors apparently storming Donetsk Govt building

looks more like market day...

Bizzarro!
It's a call for humanitatian imperialist intervention by Russia to protect the russian speakers in Crimea and east Ukraine. There is nothing left for these people now they embrace this sort of view. It demonstrates how lightly held their previous no imperilaist intervention anywhere, how neither moscow nor washington was actually just the usual crude imperialism in with a fancy gloss.

thanks for that, will have a read.

just read some, its remarkable how many people who were in their 50's or older were involved, simply couldn't see that happening here in the west.

Can't find image but Hague has just laid flowers to the Maidan dead which undoubtedly include fascists.

Have a look here

Hague was speaking from Kiev, where he was meeting Ukrainian leaders in an act of solidarity before attending a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

This is clearly an act which implies diplomatic recognition of the new, coup-installed, govt. which seems to make any claim that he's there seeking what's best for the Ukranian people as a whole a little doubtful.

Have UK or US explicitly and officially announced this recognition yet? (apologies if I've missed it)

It is an interim government, not sure where usual conventions stand on recognition of those. Barring war, they aim for May elections, though a state of emergency may scupper that.

I wonder if German and Rees are after a few more gigs at RT?

Rees and German came out with the same guff when Russia and Georgia squared off. They are the mirror image of aaronovich and Cohen, but without the intellectual vigour.

Someone on Rees' facebook is quoting Chomsky to defend the uncritically pro-Russian position

"My own concern is primarily the terror and violence carried out by my own state, for two reasons. For one thing, because it happens to be the larger component of international violence. But also for a much more important reason than that; namely, I can do something about it. So even if the U.S. was responsible for 2 percent of the violence in the world instead of the majority of it, it would be that 2 percent I would be primarily responsible for. And that is a simple ethical judgment. That is, the ethical value of one’s actions depends on their anticipated and predictable consequences. It is very easy to denounce the atrocities of someone else. That has about as much ethical value as denouncing atrocities that took place in the 18th century."

...which is fine but he said primarily, not exclusively.

And if the world happens to be one single organised system of atrocity?

really starting to see the fruits of the utter bullshit that has been reported on Ukraine in recent weeks.

lots of people coming to this story for first time with a totally bogus perspective on it, shouting hysterically without a clue of what really took place. this includes clueless prominent journalists and pundits. there are also cynical ones too, playing the game.

all very dangerous - both sides now totally at odds with eachother in interpretation, and perception of who holds moral authority.

this has already begun to manifest itself in this inane 'obama/ putin (okay, not yet) / cameron/ miliband/ whoever' is weak crap, which pushes them into making more and more pathetic boisterous statements and chestpuffing. (this in turn must give false hope to Ukrainian nationalists, who get more and more worked up too). where this ends is anyones guess.

anyone enjoying this needs a dunces hat.

This is why I haven't commented on Ukraine. I can't find any news I find reliable in its reporting.

Seems odd that in a sham democracy where consent is manufactured, he still feels what he says is likely to have a measurable effect on the US Government's actions. Rather than, perhaps, in those places that already have some antipathy to the US.

Has Gorgeous George blown any hot air on RT yet?

I expect his take on the situation will be a mix of Lord Haw Haw and 1970's Radio Moscow...
Bloody good question - and given he normally makes max effort to let everyone know what he thinks, his silence thus far (if that is what is) may be revealing. When it comes, i think you have it right.
