Ukraine

Maybe the same as happened to the Kosovan Serbs, or the Northern Irish catholics??

I should add that the US backed nut Saakashvili with NATO aspirations made clear what the neo-cons and NATO thought of Russian minorities when he launched missiles on them in an unprovoked attacked, cheered on by all manner of nuts including McCain and our own special envoy to Georgia David Sillyband.

Thanks for that link. Thought this was interesting:

Not sure I agree with this analysis. Tend to think that Putin is well pissed off about the way EU and US have handled this. First reaction to toppling of government was that this was defeat for Putin. So he is flexing his muscles. He is a calculating political operator not to be underestimated. He is not afraid of using limited force. Also Crimea is important for Russian Navy. Its an area of strategic importance to the Russian state.
Not as important as Russia itself though.

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Police struggled to keep apart rival groups holding competing rallies Wednesday in Ukraine's largely pro-Russian Crimea region where the regional parliament was to hold a crisis session on the turmoil that has gripped the country.

Over 10,000 Muslim Crimean Tatars rallied in support of Ukraine's interim leaders, waving Ukrainian flags and chanting "Ukraine is not Russia" and "Allahu Akbar," while a smaller pro-Russian rally nearby called for stronger ties with Russia and waving Russian flags.

Looks like the Muslims in Ukraine aren't keen on Russian involvement in the country's affairs.

This is a slightly misleading article. "10,000 Muslim Crimean Tatars" there is only 250,000 Crimean Tartars in Crimea and probably only 1-2,000 in Simferpol, especially being the city is majority ethnically Russian. Euronews put the figure at a more modest 2,000 http://www.euronews.com/2014/02/26/...with-pro-russian-demonstrators-in-simferopol/ which even that I would say is a little exaggerated. On the other hand there is video footage of the protest which clearly show both large crowds of Tatars and Russian's, but what looks more like majority Russian's, so again their argument that their is a "smaller pro-Russian rally nearby" is completely misleading.

So far the Russian press seems to overly exaggerate the size of the ethnic Russian population and support, while the Western press seems to ignore and downplay the size of the Russian population and support. However, that article has to be the worst example I've seen so far of distorting events in Ukraine.

Mr Hague said that further diplomatic measures could be taken against Russia in the coming days.

"If Russia continues on this course we have to be clear this is not an acceptable way to conduct international relations,"

Some media comment that the UK government reaction to Putin's invasion has been quite muted.

Hmmm....neighbouring country, once part of the union, now with sovereign independence, holding key naval and other military bases strategically vital to the dominant state of the former union...hmmm what could possibly explain Westminster's reticence?

Merkel reckons Putin has lost the plot.

Vladimir Putin has lost the plot over Ukraine, according to the German chancellor, Angela Merkel.
US reports said Merkel phoned Barack Obama on Sunday evening after speaking to the Russian president to press him to back down from his invasion of Ukraine and occupation of the Crimean peninsula.
"She was not sure he was in touch with reality, people briefed on the call said. 'In another world,' she said," the New York Times reported.

In terms of the growth of the far right in The Ukraine, just like the BNP/NF have members whose have 'traditions' in the far right, Moseley/BUF, etc, it is likely that the Ukrainian nationalists/neo-nazis had recent family, grandfathers, who were Banderists, and of course even the Nazis were shocked by the brutality of the Ukrainian Camp guards, lots to build on then...

I the impression they do a little selective editing, Russian news likes to focus on the fascists and European news like to focus on the elderly people waving Russian flags. Anyway Serhiy Zhadan the Ukrainian poet was one of the ones beaten up and the guy who raised the Russian flag was quite young, not to sure if he was a student but he certainly looked like one with those arty "defence of Sevastopol" photos http://lifenews.ru/news/128225, his now fled to Russia.

There are plenty of younger people there, though perhaps less so in the clashes with the berkut

That the protests *started* as a student protest seems to have been forgotten by some here.

Yesterday's brutality begets tomorrow's atrocities. Sadly human history is one of "do unto others, as they did to your grandparents".

Except only one is using troops. Europe must be shit at empires.

Plus Russia may well be sacrificing any chance of a normal relationship with Ukraine for another 50 years.

Though I suppose for Russia the current situation is pretty normal....

Putin's support will go through the roof back in Russia. It's shaping up to be some year, the showcase sporting event, the social grouping to demonise and now a possible major conflict to boost up the patriotism even more.
