Ukraine

Putin's support will go through the roof back in Russia. It's shaping up to be some year, the showcase sporting event, the social grouping to demonise and now a possible major conflict to boost up the patriotism even more.

Yeah right.

Do you really think the Russians are this stupid? There were huge protests against Putin last year. Do you really think his support is necessarily gonna go up on the back of this?

and there were loads of people who supported the Falklands, but loads of people who didn't.

I don't think you need to think Russians are uniformly intelligent/stupid any more than the British, to take krtek a houby's line on this. And Maggie definitely made hay from the Falklands conflict, regardless of the people who didn't support her.

i found this map useful

There's one way to shore up and extend the maidan far-rights fighters influence - give them more situations to fight in, or look like they're prepared to fight in. That's happening. A happy polarisation for them and putin. Not so for many others.

That map is useful. The pink/orange hashed area and Crimea are quite closely matched to the area that is the 'booty'. That's where the wealth is, both the fertile land and the industrial base. It should have a boundary around it labelled "w00t".

edit: See that lovely deep green. Oh yeah, that's the good stuff right there.

But the pipe lines that go to slovokia then to western europe - where the money that keep the russian regime afloat - go through west Ukraine. They have a counter-woot, and one that's working rather than being an under invested rust-belt.

Bloody good question - and given he normally makes max effort to let everyone know what he thinks, his silence thus far (if that is what is) may be revealing. When it comes, i think you have it right.

Is a live broadcast from Sevastopol, standing under a statue of Lenin, asking for too much? :p

The 'under-invested' bit being pretty important there - the IMF and Russia have future potential in mind, hence the squabbles of recent years over who holds the Ukrainian debt, I reckon. Those pipelines are heading out to Western Europe and it's not going to be kicking the fossil fuel addiction any time soon.

Just to be clear, the rust belt is the russian speaking east - the important pipe lines go through the west - well maintained, no need of anything but maintenance.

If Putin waits for the Presidential elections on 25 May what are the chances he will see someone elected President that is more to his tastes? Is there any great advantage in him making a 'move' (eg militarily) before the elections happen, beyond a little bit of muscle-flexing in Crimea alone?

theres been over 500 political offices burned to the ground as well as the homes of leading communists . With armed fascists patrolling the streets with lists and dossiers of political opponents. Any election carried out in the midst of a state sponsored fascist pogrom of opponents is simply a joke .

Yes, all currently ticking along nicely and very important for both Russia and Europe. Not sure if we're talking at cross-purpses here.

does it have to be this way? do you really feel the need to say all manner of shitfer nonsense and humiliate yourself?
