Ukraine

They are also obviously (and I'm sure sensibly) trying not to antagonise anyone.

There may be more than that going on . If the UCSJ are printing such controversial and partisan calls from an anonymous source, claiming to be ex Israeli military, making appeals to the jews of the world to support this coup without any commentary whatsoever then that stinks of state and an official line . Reeks of it , its a directive from on high , not hard to read between those lines. Its notable too that the other jewish support for these scum derives not from the local populace but internationally funded ie Israel and the US..international NGO groups, such as Hillel and a couple of others . All stinks of a state line from state sponsored international groups whos origins and backers lie outside Ukraine .

Its worth bearing in mind the current Israeli ambassador to Ukraine headed up the first Mossad office in Moscow, and was caught red handed spying on military intelligence there and has been persona non grata in Russia ever since. They tried to foist him on turkmenistan after that but they wisely refused to accept the diplomatic credentials of a known senior Mossad operative . Ukraine were happy to welcome him though as a middle finger to Russia . Not hard to guess were he stands on US geopolitical interests , as well as on helping them out .

Its certanly not helpful to US interests if the jews of the world are looking on in horror at the emergence of a criminal nazi state, in ukraine of all places, coming into existence at the point of a nazi gun and violent nazi overthrow of an elected government .With full and uncritical US backing . A bit of assaistance for the nazis in the pr department might be necessary, to put it mildly .

I think it's really important here that those of us who want to see autonomous movements developing and challenging the various oligarchs and competing states and 'imperialisms' resist the urge to take on board and internalise the language of the former and start thinking in terms of geo-political strategy and making arguments for what would be the best outcome for one or other of those competing capitals and thereby identifying with them and their actions. Recognise them, put them in context but then ask how this potentially effects the sort of outcomes that we'd favour rather than how it impacts on the other competing blocs.

You should get a professorship somewhere. :)

From the author of that piece.....

Saturday 1 March, 2.30 pm, The May Day Rooms, 88 Fleet Street, London, talk on the “revolution” in Ukraine by Gabriel Levy.

Longish piece here, not read yet, but looks like may be useful to fill in a few gaps and challenge some of the rt repition

its worth reading - the man has a political view, and he's saying 'its messy, its complicated, and it doesn't fit anyones anyones politically inspired definition of what they think is happening - its not Berlin in 1933, it might turn out that that way, but its not that now, and it could just as easily turn into lots of other things'.

decent commentary - lots of 'ifs, buts, and maybe' as well as 'i don't know', rather than shrill 'OMG this is happening and anyone who says different is a Nazi/blind idiot'.

Crimean parliament seized by pro-Russian gunmen and supporters outside.

Harriet Salem, reporting for the Guardian in Simferopol, said pro-Russian supporters are gathering to show support for the gunmen who have seized the parliament buildings. She said: The police have left the outside of the buildings and a pro-Russian leader gave a speech, which was shown on TV, mobilising people to come to the parliament. There are a lot of Russian flags, about 100 people outside and more and more arriving.

This is a bit rich though...

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has called the seizure of buildings by pro-Russian gunmen in Crimea “a drastic step” and warned that it could lead to regional conflict. He told a news conference:

This is a drastic step and I’m warning those who did this and those who allowed them to do this, because this is how regional conflicts begin. This is a very dangerous game.

Yes, it is a very dangerous game.

My take from that (very good) piece is that it may not be 1933, but it sure as hell isn't 1989.

rather than bandy dates it isn't let's consider what it is: 2014 and potentially very unpleasant whether the ukrainian fash win or the putin nationalists win. these are, i think, the most likely options tho there are a number of less probable but better outcomes

If only we could think of a Ukrainian speaker with time on their hands who might be able to help...

Who is that, former Nazi, oligarch, fraudster, who?

More on the Ukrainian response to the gunmen’s actions. I nterim president Oleksandr Turchynov has said “all necessary measures” must be taken to seize back the building, calling it a “crime against the Ukrainian state”.
Interfax Ukraine quotes him as telling a parliamentary session:
All necessary measures must be taken to protect citizens, punish those guilty of seizures in line with the law, and unblock the building. I am calling on all Ukrainians to stay calm, and on patriots to defend administrative buildings from instigators and extremists. Any attempts to seize administrative buildings will be viewed as a crime against the Ukrainian state.

Hang on, isn't that what the Kiev/Maidan/Right Sector activists were doing, cheered along by Germany and Poland!

Now Russia says it doesn't question the territorial integrity of Ukraine:

I hope to god they're telling the truth.

An amusing image, and quite a common idea of Russia in the West. Russia, a big dumb bear driven by it's primal instincts, territorial and greedy for honey. Give it a good firm whack on the nose though, and this dangerous animal will soon back down etc. Whatever you do don't turn around and run away.

that's what hitler thought and we all know where it got him...

The immediate cancelling of the language law is one of the most disturbing developments, imo. It's a clear signal that even within the mainstream opposition, Ukrainian nationalism involves a definition of Ukrainian that includes 'doesn't speak Russian as a first language'. It is on this point that the EU has been spineless towards the Baltic states, telling them not to do this, but then doing nothing to stop them. I haven't heard condemnation of this act from the EU. Have I just missed it, or have they been silent of the matter.
