Ukraine

and your responses are based on? I've told you on what my opinion is based, but you seem to know better.

I remember that when the Warsaw Pact was broken up Nato had also said they would retract and disappear.
Instead all we have seen in the last 25 years is western expansion into countries bordering Russia.
Russia get nervous when the 'Buffer Nations' disappear and get filled with intimidating pro western governments.

No just my experience in Russia has taught me to expect stupid shit from them, to expect them to try and gain access to information (no matter how innocuous or uninteresting I think it is) and yes to try and manipulate opinions no matter what level. And before you start with the old "stop picking on the Russians" shit, I am fully aware that they are not the only country doing this, its just that other countries tend to do it a bit more carefully and try not to get caught.
Sounds like you should be treating these "other countries" with a much higher threat level than the Russians then.

What, like in the Baltic states where they hold regular SS commemoration marches? And treat ethnic Russians as second class citizens? Would that float your boat?
I certainly don't have a problem with the Baltic states being members of the EU, I do have problems with any glorification of Nazis in the Baltic states as in any other country including Russia and the UK. So what's your point here and how would you deal with it? Presumably by denying the Baltic states EU membership? How do you think this would combat far right sentiments?

The EU is supposed to be a collection of democracies so allowing the Baltic states to treat a minority as second class citizens and letting state sanctioned neo nazi commemorative marches happen without any sort of sanctions belies the democratic status of the EU. Why do you see no problem with this or in fact the new Ukraine government having neo nazis in ministerial positions and being backed by the EU?

Deja vous!

How are ethnic Russians in the Baltic states being treated as second class citizens?

How can the UK allow war criminals to live freely in society and yet still remain part of the EU? Six of one half a dozen of the other!

Name me one perfect democracy anywhere, never mind within the EU?

Oh I do, but I have less concerns with what these other states do with any information they undoubtedly gather.
I guess it depends on the type of business you're in. I doubt it has anything to do with intellectual property/ patents.
What's your view on the Chinese?

No nothing to do with intellectual property/patents.

My view on the Chinese? Only been there once and while I was there was given much more freedom of movement than I have had either in Russia or the USA. I also have quite a few Chinese colleagues who I tend to get on with quite well.

Nice people, good food, nice country but a lot of pollution. :)

The US put a tiny little bump in world oil prices by releasing from their SPR
http://www.themoscowtimes.com/opinion/article/one-way-to-punish-russia/496497.html

The US may have one major weapon left. Ghawar. The Suadis have spent tens of billions building up new pumping capacity in their fields, especially the uberking oil field, Ghawar. The Saudis have been shaving back on production to keep prices at circa $100+ for a while now. They still have some spare capacity (perhaps 1-1.5 million barrels a day) and may have a bit extra by over pumping. There is also previous on this, Saudi opens the taps in the mid 80s after years of cutting production to defend price while the rest of OPEC made merry. Saudi simply calculated it could gain enough market share to make up for the lost profitability and crushed the oil price, this was a hammer blow to the USSRs forex income because they were oil dependent and had just peaked. Saudi also opened up the taps for the two US wars with Iraq to push down price.

Was the US giving the world oil markets a little extra as part of a signal to the Russians that they and the Saudis are ready to put a big hole in world oil price? The downside for the US is a drop in world oil price will really hurt many US shale producers that are marginal oil, that is they are not all that profitable atm with current prices. But they are all locked into production anyway and most have sold at hedged prices. But they can take a one year hit, Saudi would take a few months to really crank up and unmothball the fields but once the taps flow the price of world oil is unsustainable enough to possibly fall a bit. As 08 showed, if that fall is long enough there can be a real bloodbath market wise (oil crashed from over $80 to below $40).

I could be adding 2+2 and getting 5. But its just something for people to have a think about.

Interesting point. I've also spent a fair bit of time working in all those countries. To be honest though, it didn't occur to me that Russia afforded any less freedom of movement than the UK. Just shrugged it of as the usual harassment you get from authorities anywhere in the world but, now you mention it, I didn't once have a problem in China.

eta: on the other hand (work-wise) dealing with IP/ patents, the Chinese are in completely different ball park than Russia as far as risk managing information goes.

Well when we work in Russia (by far the worst) we are confined to a walled compound, about 100m x 200m, in our free time and confined to a small office when we work. We are allowed 1 escorted trip for a couple of hours per week to the nearest town. We are constantly under supervision and it gets quite oppressive at times.

In the US we live in motels/apartment complexes reserved for us, we are restricted to the towns that we work and live in, but at least it gives us a bit of walking space, we get 1 escorted visit to the nearest bigger town per week. Escorts tend to be a bit easier going though.

In China we get put up in good hotels, after work we get dropped off by our minders and are free to do whatever we want and go wherever we want until the next day when we get picked up for work again.

Jeeeesus... So you do work for Blackwater :D
Seriously though, had none of that myself. I did a 4 month stint in Moscow and had complete freedom of movement. Just the odd passport and visa checks (both very close to the Kremlin).
Went out to loads of bars/clubs and met a fair few ex-pats, none telling stories like that. All in all I had a hoot out there.
The Russians I met through work or socialising were very friendly and great hosts.

Nope I'm an International Civil Servant working for an International Organisation linked to the UN, to give you the generalised term.
The places we work tend to be fairly isolated so nothing like Moscow, we are told that the restrictions are for our health and safety/security, yeah right!

E2A actually come to think about it, I've been to Syria a couple of times recently and had more freedom there than I get in Russia. :D

I've not kept up with this thread of late, but have the wise words of Steven Seagal been posted?

Worryingly, he plays down the role of the anti-poll tax campaign in bringing down Thatcher. We shall have words, I'm sure.

So Fuchs66, you work for the same people who backed a coup that has promoted neo nazis in to ministerial positions and then you accuse others who oppose this of being in the pay of the Kremlin. Surely, by your own admissions, you're the one who is in the pay of any governmental forces and you back their view. Do they pay you for this?
